Having mixed feelings.
I'm absolutely thrilled that Obama was elected. However, I'm not loving the results on some of these ballot measures.

Proposition 8 passed. What the hell? Who the hell has been voting for this? I can't believe that many people would vote to take people's rights away like that. Same with amendment two in Florida. I haven't seen the results yet, but it doesn't look good. What the hell is wrong with people????

Proposition K, which would decriminalize prostitution in San Francisco, didn't pass. Honestly, I knew that was going to happen, but I was still really hopeful that maybe people would come to their senses and pass it. I know a couple people in the sex industry who were really hoping it would happen. And it would have been really historic if it did happen.

1. If I could hold out some hope ...
Prop 8 passing is a bitter disappointment ... no doubt about it.

I feel like the US took 2 steps forward and then 1 step back... BUT ... it will happen, one day. I truly believe that one day my American friends will be free to marry and will have the same rights as we do here in Canada.

A black man is now your president and no one would have believed this just a few years ago.

Hope is a strong word, please hang on to it, it will happen for all of you, of this I'm sure.

2. yeah, and it looks like we
won't get that filibuster proof majority either. take the good with the bad. it seems to me that even though it passed into law, prop 8 is unconstitutional and therefore will be challenged and eventually thrown away. at least i hope so.

we did win HOPE at least.

3. I got up early wondering if a 50% majority is sufficient to change the constitution...
since we need a 2/3 majority in this state to raise taxes.

so what margin was the win? I can't find election results on the secretary of state's site...

4. It has Sort of Taken the Wind Out of the Sails for Me
I am from a Red State and my partner of 17 years is a California transplant here. Rather naively on my part I have always looked to California as being a liberal bastion that always finds a way to do the right thing. I had little doubt that Prop 8 would fail and we gave money to the No on 8 campaign.

The real thing that saddens me is that this proposition REMOVED a right that already existed and enshrines it in the state constitution. I feel for all those couples that married and this morning wake up and see that fact has evaporated.

I tell myself they might take away the right to marry but they can't take away the love and feelings we share. As my partner told his mom in California...gay people are not going away or back into the closets. We'll be back.

7. It's disgusting how the majority is allowed to vote on the rights of a minority.
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 07:27 AM by AspieGrrl
And, yes, I know people are going to get pissed off at me for comparing Prop 8 and Prop K.

What the hell is the logic behind these propositions? Ask people if they would allow a minority their rights?

Yeah, because people should totally vote on whether people have the right to get married, or to work safely without being arrested for having an "immoral" line of work. :sarcasm:

People make me sick sometimes. Like, honestly, I can see why Prop K didn't pass, but the amount of people voting yes on Prop 8 is just...inexcusable.

8. I'm confused, I always thought CHANGES to a Constitution required a SUPER MAJORITY of 67%
meaning even if it passes at 51% IT STILL FAILS?
 oh well

5. Considering how confusing the language always seems to be...
for ANY proposition, could the passing of prop 8 simply be due to an honest misunderstanding or ignorance on the part of a small minority of voters?

13. Proposal 8 passed?
Oh man. I just woke up. I have friends who just flew out there very recently to get married. :( How sad for them and so many other people. I was hoping to wake up to only good news.

14. Turnout Hurt...
I just chatted with a friend in SoCal who was pissed and his reason was that turn-out in his district was down from past elections. He lives in a heavily Democratic area and said he thought that since there wasn't a real "big ticket" race and Obama had such a big lead, they didn't bother to go to the polls. It'll be interesting to see if this had an effect on this proposition.

Maybe a Cali DU'er with access to the numbers can look inside and see if turn-out was down in Democratic areas.
