Open seats, rematches in Ill. congressional races as Halvorson wins seat

CHICAGO (AP) _ Illinois Democrats gained another congressional seat Tuesday by claiming a once reliably Republican district but were struggling in their attempt to pick up another that a four-term GOP congressman was fighting hard to defend.

Democrats claimed one of the two most closely watched contests in the state when Democrat Debbie Halvorson, an influential senator in the Illinois Legislature, beat Republican businessman Marty Ozinga to take exiting GOP Rep. Jerry Weller's seat.

With 73 percent of precincts reporting, Halvorson had 117,999 votes, or 58 percent, and Ozinga had 72,213 votes, or 35 percent. Green Party candidate Jason Wallace of Normal had 14,808, or 7 percent.

Amid ethics questions, Weller opted not to seek an eighth term in the 11th District that stretches from Chicago's south suburbs to the farms of central Illinois.
