And so it comes to this ....... such a waste

That picture is John McCain asking his supporters to withhold their boos as he mentions Barack Obama's name at the start of his concession speech.

The speech he gave hit many of the right notes. In another setting it might have been pitch perfect.

But the speech was given in front of the people who have become his supporters. And last night's events at The Biltmore in Phoenix was not attended by casual supporters and the unwashed ignoramuses, like Sam Wurzelburg. It was instead, attended by the well heeled and the well connected. These people are John McCain's Base Of Record. These are people who have had it all and want more.

These are people predisposed to boo the newly and duly elected President of the ENTIRE United States of America.

Some of these are the people who just eight years ago did the most despicable campaign dirty tricks on the man now trying to shut them up as they boo.

John McCain's Concession Speech was meaningless and pointless as a concession speech. Instead, it became a commentary on where this man has gone. How far he has wandered. How overly ambitious he was. How willing he has been shown to be to do **anything** and comport with **anyone** to attain his personal goal.

He was a small man when this started.

He is smaller today.

The speech was the perfect coda to a symphony written in blind but impotent ambition.

Sam will be in court soon enough. Sarah and her pet husband, Toad, will slither back to Alaska, and John and his frigid wife will sip gin and tonics on the porches of their homes.

2. He couldn't whip up the hate for months and then expect them to not hate at the last minute
He's been calling Obama a terrorist and a Socialist and un-American for ages. He certainly shouldn't have been too surprised.

I want to know how Palin is going to handle it. She seemed to indicate that she couldn't live in the US under Obama because he would destroy the country and didn't see America the way real Americans see it.

3. Great post! Many have applaudd McCain for his speech, but
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 08:48 AM by old mark
you must remember who used the racially divisive tactics, the inuendo, smears, guilt by association even when there was no association. The cause of the booing is McCain himself, the politician playing one last role in his ten year quest for the presidency.

Maybe some of his audience last night will form the basis of whatever replaces the GOP, or form a new party because they find the GOP too liberal.

A was very glad to see their stunned faces last night, and I hope to see them stunned by loss of hope again and again in the future.

Rec.

7. he never shut up the boos during the campaign. Why start now?
Small man indeed. he encouraged them, and encouraged worse than boos. His running mate was even worse, but she was an extension of him and he stands guilty by voluntary association.

I'm shorter than he is by far, but I'm not as small as that.

Then again, I'm

8. In McCain's defense
I don't think he was comfortable with the hateful attacks. I think like Senator Clinton he listened to the wrong people who were telling him negative was the way to go and the American people said "NO MORE".

He **chose** not to.

It is indefensible.

17. Not in his defense but
I think he couldn't chance worldwide embarrassment knowing this speech would receive wide
and repeated attention ...

He's encouraged this hatred all along but it's over for the moment as far as this campaign --

Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 09:03 AM by MrScorpio
An ugly bunch, if ever there was one.

I knew then and there that their ugliness would spell doom for the goddamned Republicans.

What I could not have fathomed was how that ugliness was going to damage the country.

Good fucking riddance.

9. John McCain tries to "raise the roof;" FAILS
I give him this, though. Not once, but TWICE, in his short concession speech he stated that Obama had kicked his ass:

"My friends, we have come to the end of a long journey. The American people have spoken, and they have spoken clearly."

"Sen. Obama and I have had and argued our differences, and he has prevailed."

Ouch. That's gotta hurt.

10. In hindsight, I view McCain more as a tragic character than a villain.
This is a guy who completely lost control of his campaign in the last months of his candidacy. Gaffes, embarrassing followers that made him visibly cringe, poorly-executed PR stunts, and a running mate more consumed with her own cult of personality to even realize what it is a Vice President does, pretty much led to his downfall.

But like I said, hindsight is 20/20.

11. John McCain is prime example of Republican incompetence
He slit his own throat

The goddamned Republicans have promoted these clueless clods so much that they never know when to stop.

Barack Obama is the real sharp deal.

It was no contest

21. That's pretty much how I see it
I'm willing to give McCain a chance to follow through on his promise of helping Obama, where he could be a strong influence on moderating what's left of the Republicans so we can get some things done.

I think first whoever was responsible for picking Palin, and then Palin herself after that, is responsible for the nasty and disgusting tone that was set in the end. That's not how he ran in the primaries.

20. I don't blame McCain for the hateful mob.
That group was around long before McCain and they'll be around for then next election too. In fact, they'll be around for every election.

McCain was a man who turned himself over to a vile group to manage an election that had any real intent of winning in the first place.

The republican advisers and consultants knew this election was lost from the beginning. McCain was give his turn as a goodbye gesture just like the Democrats did for Mondale in 1984. There was no real effort to win this. I don't even think McCain had any real lead in the selection of Palin. That was done for him.

The guy has to get up this morning and realize he sold his soul to a vile group who just wanted him out of the way.

Those hateful people at his rally are the reason this country is so screwed up and almost went over the cliff to the point of no return. :grr:

25. Read the article in Newsweek - Palin wanted to speak, but
McCain refused to allow it. He was evidently not consulted on a lot of things regarding Palin, and she supposedly made many of hre hate-stirring
speeches without clearing things with Mccain.

The phrase "Wasilla Hillbillies" was used.
