Prop 8 declared passed in Cal.
By LISA LEFF, Associated Press Writer
Wednesday, November 5, 2008

(11-05) 09:51 PST LOS ANGELES (AP) --

In an election otherwise full of liberal triumphs, the gay rights movement suffered a stunning defeat as California voters approved a ban on same-sex marriages that overrides a recent court decision legalizing them.

The constitutional amendment — widely seen as the most momentous of the nation's 153 ballot measures — will limit marriage to heterosexual couples, the first time such a vote has taken place in a state where gay unions are legal.

Gay-rights activists had a rough election elsewhere as well. Ban-gay-marriage amendments were approved in Arizona and Florida, and Arkansas voters approved a measure banning unmarried couples from serving as adoptive or foster parents. Supporters made clear that gays and lesbians were their main target.

In California, with 95 percent of precincts reporting Wednesday, the ban had 5,125,752 votes, or 52 percent, while there were 4,725,313 votes, or 48 percent, opposed.

9. Bummer...... At least my county voted no but
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 01:32 PM by Ichingcarpenter
my town itself voted yes. The churches were very organized and well financed pushing this.
I have no idea what was said at the pulpit but they even had a ground game handing out
door hangers and propaganda.

I heard that there is still promise with legal challenges so lets not give up all hope yet.

5. It just doesn't make sense.
in anywhere but California maybe. Sometimes my own "True Blue" State of NY does some decidedly unprogressive things too, but this takes the cake.

18. It might make more sense to you if a diologue was to occur between both
sides on this. To see the concerns of both sides.

Note: I said dialogue, not the anti prop-8'rs shouting down the opposition. Which is all I have ever seen.

23. Yes. I think gay marriage needs an electoral mandate rather than a legal one
There's no getting away from the fact that it stirs strong feelings, and it seems that a majority of voters, even in CA, are conservative on the issue. I think this struggle can and should be won at the ballot box. A silver lining is that the defeatists (of a proposed ban) came much closer last night than in the previous election some years ago. Now the thing to do is start planning for a 'yes on equality' campaign.

26. It's a huge state
The coasts are blue, but the rest of it is deep red. And you have San Diego which is ultra conservative as well.

What bothers me, is how few voters actually turned out in San Francisco, Berkley, and Oakland. I really thought that if it was within an hundred thousand votes, that the Bay Area would flip it easily. They didn't have as near many show up to the polls in that area that I thought would.

It was just a strange night on that front.

22. 3-4 million ballots still to count, H8 leads by 400K.
I cannot believe CA did this the same election we sent Obama to the White House.

17. A heinous act of tyranny.
It is time for the GLBT population to start a tax revolt in each of these states. We should not be bound to support a government which acts in tyranny.

24. Ban ALL marriage. Gay or Straight.
Next time prop 8 is put on the ballot in CA, language must be included to make it include gays AND straights. If gays lose the right to marry, so do straights. Everyone treated equal.

25. I know some far-right conservatives who would agree that government should have no say in marriage
Eliminate all government-issued marriage licenses and all of the tax benefits. Maybe that would be the best way to go.
