31. We should export Sioux County to South Dakota
If we had kicked Sioux County out of Iowa prior to 2004, Kerry would have won Iowa by a couple hundred votes.

16. But we only have four counties (five if you count Kalawao, the Hansen's disease settlement)
oddly, the only organized county NOT on the list is the one Barack's from. Mine. :(

15. Well, look at the poverty rates in those red state counties...
Edited on Wed Nov-05-08 08:59 PM by misanthrope
...and it will make more sense.

The only counties in Alabama that went blue were Jefferson (inner city B'ham from where white folks fled a couple of decades ago) and the Black Belt, which is chiefly rural, predominantly African-American and has Third World level living conditions.

17. Curious point. It would be cool to see some cross tabs
with respect to the red areas- as well as the blue areas, like Marin.

I bet there are a lot of interesting things that can be teased out of the data.

18. They are very, very poor and almost 100% African or Native American.
Shannon County, SD is part of a reservation and the second poorest county in the US.

26. Well in NC (now a blue state) those counties are UNIVERSITY counties
and definitely NOT the "poorest" counties.

21. I'm in Number 2!!!
Yeah, baby!

Prince Georges County, MD is majority AA, but is very ethnically diverse. We have everything from almost inner-city crime to multi-million dollar mansions, all within a relatively short drive. I'm from the very northern tip of the county, which was pretty solid Obama territory. I was down in Accokeek, which is the very southern part by the Potomac River over the weekend, and saw nothing by McCain/Palin signs.

So hell yeah, I'm proud!

And it's not just Seattle, it's a big county with a fair amount of conservative suburban and rural areas.

It seemed when I was in Florida, I was entering a new county every 20 miles while driving the Interstate.

Some of the counties have 10 people, and some have 10,000,000. :P
