Pelosi Says Push for Bigger Stimulus May Await Obama

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi signaled Wednesday that Democrats may push to enact a $61 billion stimulus bill this month if they can secure Republican support, and wait for the new Democratic president and Congress before seeking a more expansive package.
Pelosi told reporters that whether Congress clears an economic stimulus bill in a lame-duck session will be up to the White House and Senate Republicans.
While a Democratic aide said House leaders would prefer a plan totaling about $100 billion because they believe the struggling economy will not turn around soon, Pelosi suggested the Senate take up the $61 billion package (HR 7110) the House passed on Sept. 26 and send that to President Bush.
That bill included funding for infrastructure projects, state Medicaid programs, an extension of unemployment insurance and food stamps.
