GOP women's board resigns after remarks on Muslims

Associated Press - November 4, 2008 10:55 AM ET

ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - The head of the Republican Women of Otero County refused to resign after calling Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama a "Muslim socialist."

Otero County GOP chairwoman Sassy Tinling says that when Marcia Stirman refused to quit, the rest of the board of the Republican Women's group gave Stirman their resignations.

Tinling also says the county GOP executive committee disassociated itself from the GOP women's group.

Stirman wrote a letter published October 21st in the Alamogordo Daily News in which she also said she believes Muslims are our enemies.

The New Mexico Republican Party says Stirman doesn't speak for them and her comments don't reflect GOP values and beliefs.

1. Good for them!
Time they took back their party from the asylum inmates who have been running it for 8 years.

24. Way too little, way too late
Good little GoP'ers should have taken these kinds of actions when many of their brethren and sisteren were spreading vicious lies about President Clinton calling him a murderer and drug smuggler, etc. ad nauseum. Funny how they only got a conscious when they got their Electoral asses handed to them.

3. Good on them. Perhaps the GOP is beginning to purge itself of the wingnut element
There's going to be an interesting struggle for control of the party between moderate conservatives and extremists.

5. That's my take, as well.
I have a feeling the Repuglicans will marginalize themselves and the Libertarian Party will pick up all the moderates.

8. Moderates will lose this struggle. They have no place to go.

21. I'm inclined to agree.
The wingnuts are gonna be all that's left of the GOP. The moderates probably can't form their own party, so will drift off to join other parties (Dem and Lib) or just call themselves independents.

7. Kudos to the former board members.

It never fails. Whenever a wingnut rises to a position of power, no matter how trivial that position may be in actuality, they assume they have the power to say or act in any manner they choose and the hell with what anyone else thinks about it.

Witness the pResident we have endured for the past eight years.

11. Wow. That's impressive.
And it gives me some hope, coming from the GOP. Maybe the more sane ones are getting fed up with the rest.

25. This is how you build a new party for a new century.
At some point, you have to reject the politics of the past.

12. Text of the offending letter below.
From this link

She may think she's a republican. It would appear the republican party has other ideas. This stuff is going to be interesting to watch for quite some time.

Marcia Stirman: "Why I'm a Republican"

I read in today's paper what a woman wrote explaining why she's a Democrat. Let me tell you why I'm not. I'm a Republican because:

I believe in a sovereign God who sometimes gives us what we deserve.

I believe Muslims are our enemies.

I believe in life. A baby is not just a fetus, but a living being no matter where it resides.

I believe there is a good reason for the death penalty.

I believe in fiscal responsibility, for the government and for us.

I believe the government is way too big and rife with greed and corruption.

I believe in the truth. People believe lies because it's much easier than finding the truth.

I believe in personal responsibility. That includes spanking your children.

I believe American women should raise their own children and American men should be men enough to pay for children they've produced.

I believe a man and woman make marriage. Period.

I believe in America first and foremost and we ought to take care of our own people, our own land, and illegal aliens should go home.

I believe in guns and knowing how to use them properly.

I believe war is a fact of life and we should always win.

I believe in lower taxes. I know how to spend money better than Congress any day of the week.

I believe in voter ID.

I believe there is a moderate and a socialist in this election.

I agree with a two-party system, but Obama isn't a messiah or a democrat.

He's a Muslim socialist.

The train of thought appears to be off the tracks and heading off the bridge. But, hey, I voted for the "Muslim socialist" so what could I know? Oy, sad I noticed she at least spelled Muslim correctly.

13. Jesus Christ, she's bat-shit nuts and sounds like a Timothy McVeigh type.
"I loves me some precious babies, but I believe you oughta whack the shit outta them."

What a conflicted, demented, and disturbed psycho she is.

15. Precisely why I posted it here.
She's another one to be watched for her whacked out beliefs.

It's good to see some repubs putting distance between themselves and this type. I hope it continues until these people are so marginalized they're afraid to come out of their basement.

18. She is an extremist.
I am so glad the other women took such a weighty stand on this. I think they get this way through church. Alamogordo is also big in defense. Holloman Air force Base and White Sands Missile Range are there. So defense supports the economy and we know what Repugs spend on defense.

22. She should listen to her own words
I believe in the truth. People believe lies because it's much easier than finding the truth.

The only words she did say that held a ring of truth to them.
