WASHINGTON – So much for a lasting Republican majority.

The Republican Party is essentially in tatters, and not that long after President Bush's 2000 election spurred talk of enduring GOP dominance.

John McCain's shellacking, along with recent congressional losses, leaves the party searching for a new leader and identity.

"It's time for the losing to stop. And my commitment to you is that it will," House GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio told his rank and file after the party lost at least 19 congressional seats Tuesday — on his watch.

It depends on what field you're in. Building trades are in short supply (everyone's gone to Alberta), so construction work's doing pretty well; IT jobs are generally pretty good, although generically unstable; tourism's still good, but not as good as it used to be--although if the loonie keeps dropping, look for an uptick; the port of Halifax is okay, not great; agriculture (such as it is) is in the toilet as usual, although organics are coming on reasonably well; offshore gas is still sort of limping along; etc.

Overall, not bad--and definitely a LOT better than when I first moved here in 1990. Could always be better, of course. :hi:
