DUers who were in Greek Life (Fraternities/Sororities) in College: I have a question
I am alumnus of the Fraternity system from college. I am a SAMmy, one of the only Fraternities to publicly protest the Viet Nam War starting in 1967.

I am a proud progressive and Democrat. Why has the Greek system attracted so many Freepers and Republicans? Of everyone I know in Greek Life, I am outnumbered by Republicans eight-or-nine to one.

Did you see this in college too?

1. When I was in a Fraternity, there were Conservative Houses and Liberal ones
I was in a Liberal one

There were even Hippy Houses, where they had growlights and farms in their basements.

This was the late 80's/early 90's.

Again, there is not much to do in Corvallis Oregon

So this could have been why

4. Exclusivity, snobbery and hyper-competitiveness are traits of both.
In recent years, I think the Greek system has made great strides to clean up it's act from the Reagan/Bewsh-friendly days of meanness, hazing and more or less being a haven for people who want to live the caste-system they dwelled on top of in high school year after year. That doesn't mean the bullshit still doesn't exist, your experiences being testimony. I went to a progressive working class commuter uni where the Greeks weren't really that big a deal since the majority of the student body was over 25, but when I visited my friends at other places, I saw first hand how bad these idiots were.

5. I pledged but quit after about 3 months...became very disillusioned
at all the phony bullshit. This was long before the VietNam thing though.
