Georgia Senate race heading for a runoff.
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/georgia-senate-race-headed-for-runoff.html

It appears that the late ballots did, after all, bring incumbent Republican Saxby Chambliss under 50% in his race against Jim Martin, and so a special election will be held December 2, four weeks after the yesterday's election day.

In special elections, turnout is generally way down from general elections. It becomes much more about base motivation, organization, and GOTV. So, although Jim Martin appears to have been behind by a handful of points last night, don't assume he can't win a special election, even if the polls show him behind in every release.

Folks we need this senate seat and it can be done. President Obama will be able to do much more with complete control of the senate. This seat is crucial and with enough donations we can make the difference. We need a flood of donations as soon as possible. For Max Cleland let's take this one and put Saxby Chambliss out.

2. Do other states have runoffs?
As much as they're a pain in the ass, I like the idea of the two top vote-getters having a special election. The fact that no candidate gets 50 percent in a general election should be a statement in itself...that most people don't want the frontrunner. What about it, Minnesota, Alaska, etc.? Don't you think it's only fair that "their expressed will" be taken into consideration?

3. Georgia is unique in this regard I believe although I am not 100% sure.
We can thank the third party candidate as well for taking a percentage of the vote and keeping Chambliss from going over the 50%. I know a lot of people may think Georgia is a write off because it leans so heavily red all the time but if we had enough money flowing in we could definitely change the face of Georgia politics. We need a serious national flow of cash and fast. December 2nd is the runoff election.
