The man behind Prop 8 - blue blood schizo, wack-job christian
Sorry if this is a dupe. It's scary that people like this are able to impose their psychotic breaks on the rest of us via the lever of wealth.

The Man Behind Proposition 8

Among the local ballot measures to be decided on Election Day, California’s Proposition 8 is perhaps the most fiercely contested. Backers of the proposition to ban same-sex marriage in the state cast their campaign in apocalyptic terms. “This vote on whether we stop the gay-marriage juggernaut in California is Armageddon,” born-again Watergate felon and Prison Fellowship Ministries founder Chuck Colson told the New York Times. Tony Perkins, the president of the Christian right’s most powerful Beltway lobbying outfit, Family Research Council, echoed Colson’s language. “It’s more important than the presidential election,” Perkins said of Prop 8. “We will not survive if we lose the institution of marriage.”

The campaign for Prop 8 has reaped massive funding from conservative backers across the country. Much of it comes from prominent donors like the Utah-based Church of Latter Day Saints and the Catholic conservative group, Knights of Columbus. Prop 8 has also received a boost from Elsa Broekhuizen, the widow of Michigan-based Christian backer Edgard Prince and the mother of Erik Prince, founder of the controversial mercenary firm, Blackwater.

While the Church of Latter Day Saints’ public role in Prop 8 has engendered a growing backlash from its more liberal members, and Broekhuizen’s involvement attracted some media attention, the extreme politics of Prop 8’s third largest private donor, Howard F. Ahmanson, reclusive heir to a banking fortune, have passed almost completely below the media’s radar. Ahmanson has donated $900,000 to the passage of Prop 8 so far.

3. You have to wonder why these people are so worked up over it that they will throw $900,000 at it.

5. Power.
What they don't get or don't care about is: As long as they don't hurt anyone, They have a right to their own thoughts and beliefs on ___________________, NO ONE wants to change them, but the problem is that they feel they MUST make everyone like themselves OR ELSE!!! That's where they cross the line and we MUST fight them.

Why are they sooooooo motivated to do this? I think it is power that they desire more than anything else. The desire for power can be attached to many things; this is what makes homophobes DANGEROUS, they coalesce with others desiring power for whatever and threaten Freedom.

9. Sure, but I don't get why they want power over me. I have nothing to do with them.

6. Yeah
$900,000 that could have been used to feed the poor, clothe the naked, heal the sick, and house the homeless. What good "Christians" these people are!

7. My opinion is that if Jesus Christ visited now, he would disown all churches and start over.

12. yup. If they thought the first story of what he did in the temple was fierce
They have no CLUE as to the righteous anger he would drop on top of their bigoted heads.

13. I agree. He would cry over all of those who have been killed "for their own good."

I'm a genuine Liberal, which requires that I not exclude others, but it's getting harder and harder to tolerate churches. They are responsiple for so much HARM and much of the "good" some of them do is nothing but self-interest in disguise. I'm thinking about just simply being Against them. The Catholic Left does Good, so do Quakers and there are Liberal Episcopalians, Methodists, and Unitarians; these give me pause in opposing churches overall.

11. They failed with abortion.
They needed a new objective to get the base all riled up. They have found a new target rich environment it seems. I read this article yesterday and it made me sick to my stomach. $900,000 is not a lot of money to these people. To them it's a practical expenditure that will reap loads of votes their way in whatever direction they should wish.

4. Anyone think that much of the donations

were 'laundered' through those sources and that the real donors were using them to avoid taking either the heat or the consequences ?

14. "...wack jobs???" That's too nice. They are dangerous demented perverts.
On one hand they shield and defend child sexual predators, on the other they violate the civil rights of gay couples.

It doesn't get much lower than that. Their public displays of Bible Thumping and Humping are vile and disgusting. They need to find a quiet closet to pray in.
