1. Agent Mike
is our friend. And we are Agent Mike's friends. We encourage Agent Mike to keep his Oath of Office and protect the Constitution. Wherever that may lead.

11. That, my dear Turbineguy, would be refreshing
I just hope they still have copies of the Constitution in tact somewhere in DC.

2. Doesn't matter . . ..
. . . as long as the "RMO" area of DU remains secure. All the real stuff happens there anyway.
Project 04DW is moving along nicely.

12. And the wolf is still howling at noon
Unless it is a Monday that ends in a primate. Wink, wink, nod, nod. ;)

3. It's a good question. Power is more easily grabbed than it is relinquished. . .
As the recipient of a political reality altered beyond anything the wildest thinkers could have imagined just a few short years ago, it will take a remarkable will for Obama to revoke it, let alone strive to revert it to what it was before. Certainly, I see a quick return to some aspects of "normality," but the allure of unbridled power will remain and, despite readily accomplished cosmetic improvements, power's seduction will be a Siren song of indeterminate appeal.

I have a lot of faith in Obama's Constitutional scholarship and hope it proves strong enough to overcome the tantalizing appeal for power which Bush's lust for control has created.

19. I think the best argument is an efficiency one
Where should the allocation of resources be used? When it is used to intimidate or for more control, as it as been, rather than to protect from actual threats, as it should be, then power is misused. I like to think that the power of the internet is changing that.

4. I'm sure Free Republic has always had their own Agent Mike
and we will always have one as well. It's their job to keep track of potential threats and if they think the internet is a place where that could happen, they'll always keep track of what people are talking about, here and there.

14. Agent Mike is the code name for the government moles inhabiting and/or watching DU
I don't think there's just one Agent Mike. Rather I think it is a collaborative effort. Some of them lay low most of the time and report back to various federal agencies about our activities, who they need to keep an eye on, etc. Then there are some Agent Mikes that try to get things stirred up while preemptively skirting future entrapment charges.

Oh, I might just be a tad :tinfoilhat:

16. Agent Mike goes way back to the beginnings of the internet...
Even before TCP/IP became the standard packet protocol. Back in the days of UUCP, usenet and bang path email addressing, Agent Mike was there. Agent Mike will always be there, as he should be monitoring public discourse. It's the private discourse that I would like to get him out of.

18. You're right
Agent Mike isn't something new and has been around by many names. The problem is, as you said, there's a difference in public discourse and private discourse. There's also the wholesale spying that was becoming like J. Edgar Hoover crazy. I hope that private citizens are no longer spied on without satisfying an actual neutral court first.

8. Oh we should keep him on.
He makes a good pot of coffee, picks up after himself and really doesn't bother us. He spends his time in the basement watching soaps. Anyway, his 'boss' probably has forgotten about him.

:hi: Mikey
