Gay Californians: come to Connecticut! Attempt to undo our strong marriage equality decision FAILED
We had a ballot question asking whether we should convene a Constitutional Convention which was a devious way to get around our excellent CT Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex couples to marry on sound equal protection grounds. The Catholic church was behind ballot question, running an ad trying to portray the issue as one that would expand democracy. The question was firmly rejected by CT voters. It seems people were suspicious of fooling around with our state Constitution. AFSME did a great job of informing its members about the true nature of the ballot question. And there didn't seem to be a racial division at all in the voting.

Here's a bit of background on the issue and the campaign itself http://www.yaledailynews.com/articles/view/25903. Basically, the opposition outspent proponents handily and it paid off!

We'd love to have an infusion of gay people to our state since we are losing our population numbers fairly steadily. I know we don't have your sunshine, but we don't have floods and earthquakes either!

Peace and Love to you!

3. There's a lovely little town on the CT river that is a haven for gay couples and has been for years.
It's East Haddam. Our little towns can be very charming. My favorites are in Litchfield County, a beautiful place indeed.

5. I think it's either E. Haddam or Haddam, not sure.
My favorite town in that area is Chester. What a lovely place.

6. I am not originally from this area but I like it here.
I am on the Norwich/Uncasville line. I can easily walk to the casino from where I live. I think Dodd is from Haddam, now that i think of it.

7. Come to Massachusetts, you can marry, and we have a strong and active gay community
Like anywhere else, Massachusetts has pockets of right wing filth, but we have a large gay community, and gay marriage is legal.
Gay couples would be welcomed here.

9. My dtr and family live in Sherborn, MA. A lovely town.
But I do think our CT Supreme Court decision is stronger, probably not by much tho.

I am rooting for the Elis at The Game Nov. 22. Bulldogs, bulldogs, bow wow wow!

8. Waterbury flooded nearly NOLA-style in 1955
of course, lots of flood control work has been done on the Naugatuck River since then.

10. Waterbury has lots worse problems than that flood, bad as it was.
Corrupt, horrible politicians including our former, disgraced governor, John Rowland.

11. But just think what a kick in the pants it would be
to the "We're Not Fonda Jane" crowd (a bunch of Reagan Democrat types actually stopped a movie with Jane Fonda from filming in the Brass City, because of her anti-war views!) to have an influx of gay people!

It's built on a series of hills, just like SF; in fact, the highest points in both cities are exactly the same, 935 feet above sea level. (For whatever it's worth, both have crosses atop them, too.) There's commuter train access (not a whole lot) to NYC, and some of the best Italian restaurants you can get to without a passport.

On the other hand, Rowland is out of jail (though "Pedo" Phil Giordano is not); be advised.

13. Phil will never see the light of day as a free man, AFAIC.
sorry that I have this negative view of Waterbury. I live in New Haven and love it so much here. Nearby we have our own little nest of bigotry, in East Haven, but there are some good folks there too, I know them.

12. Check out New Haven: gay-friendly and progressive in general
usually has as many Green Party aldermen as repukes, for instance.

A couple of hours from NYC by train, longstanding theater tradition ("We bombed in New Haven..."), and of course, the Yale presence (a local saying goes, "Without Yale, New Haven would be Bridgeport"!), with lecturers, performances, etc., as well as upscale shopping and dining geared toward faculty.

If the local transit situation (we used to call it "Connecticut Tran-shit") were different, I might not have left (supposedly the present, non-felonious repuke governor has made some progress on that score!).

Edited on Thu Nov-06-08 04:42 PM by KamaAina
in my day (early '80s), there was a local band called the "Uncle Chick Band" that had a song called "I Don't Want To Live in Bridgeport"! (And I ain't goin' back there again...) :eyes:

altho I must say that I feel sorry for that city. What a sad place...

19. Yep. I loved being a lowly volunteer in Ned Lamont's campaign, too!
It was a pretty much lost cause at that time but I'll bet it would be a different story today.

20. I object!
There are plenty of us in California who want our gay community to stay right here! We need all of them right here. Cripes! This place would turn into a freeking Jesusland and we'd all have to move to Connecticut and Massachussettes!

21. Of course you do. I just wanted to welcome anyone who wanted to marry legally in a state.
Do stand and fight! I have a straight daughter in L.A. and she is absolutely FURIOUS at what has happened.
