We are trying, and so are many Mormon mothers with gay children!

Did you know that there were protests here in Utah, organized BY Mormons?

The church has no problem whatsoever kicking out anyone who refuses to conform.

15. I don't agree. You thought the Clinton years were bad for right wing asshatery?
I think the nuts are coming out of the woodwork for an Obama Presidency. They were openly calling him a terrorist and the anti-christ. Wait til Rush and Hannity and Savage capitalize on this shit and you know they will. They will stir these people into a feeding frenzy.

29. Yep, like they did in the closing months of the Hoover administration
what killed that Culture war was the Great Depression

Depending how deep this economic crisis is... how how hard the culture war will come to a sudden end.

In the meantime they get to be more annoying

Remember, the KKK marched in DC for the last time in 1928

Coincidence? no

There are more and more parallels to that era every day, becoming more and more clear

But in the meantime they will be a pain. As is the Second Great Revival will probably end the same way that one ended... with plenty of tent (Stadium) revivals, and the retreat from the political life by fundies

And you forget, the 35 and under fundy crowd is not that interested in the culture war of the 80s and 90s... which is another parallel

36. The Klan had over 4 million members back then.
A lot of people joined to social network. When the more militant side of the Klan started to lynch and kill people, that's when a lot of "moderate" Klansmen quit. Not because of the depression.

39. Historians (at least some ) disagree
the I need to keep a roof over my head, and a job, had a lot to do with it as well

The culture war died HARD

And the fundies, what are they? 20 million?

The fact is that the 35 and younger are not interested in the battles of their fathers... in some cases not even abortion

You may say they are more moderate, or getting ready to leave the political stage

44. Granted. Most kids you see today spouting that crap...
Are only parroting what they have heard from their parents. Most are pretty apathetic and want to appear that they have a stance on something, ANYTHING, so as not to appear ignorant. I don't know though, it's hard to imagine these people just going back and dying under a rock.

I'll give you the "Depression contributed to the Klans demise" as well, I just found a source that backs that up.

:-)

for this and the culture war DIES hard.

Regardless of the reason

In the meantime they become increasingly annoying

75. The gay population is reputed to have a higher income base, so
perhaps now is the time to put some capital into a retaliatory measure against the ones who attacked them..Catholics & Mormons do not have "pure intentions" or actions in their ranks..

Growing up Catholic, it always bothered the HELL out of me when I saw HUGE Catholic families...poor families...being coerced into giving..always giving...and yet the hierarchy of the church was rich beyond all comprehension.. Our Monsignor had wall to wall carpeting in his GARAGE..and as a single man, lived alone in a mansion..not a McMansion..a REAL mansion right across the street from the Country Club...

Maybe it's time to fight fire with fire, and work to strip the so-called religious of their "no-tax" benefits. Because they pay NO TAX, "their money" can and IS used to harrass & discriminate against people who DO pay taxes..

This is what democracy is all about.

Every domination that has actively and knowingly violated IRS federal law, should be presented with a tax bill, starting retroactively, from the day they actively began endorsing specific political candidates, and undeniable politically motivated agendas, to get their own personal narrow minded religious beliefs written into law.

If any church that is in violation, can't fork over the doe, then their properties need to be seized, and sold to satisfy the debt, just as it would be for any other citizen or group in debt to the IRS.

Its time to start demanding people that our Constitution be enforced.

People can still practice their own religious beliefs in their homes, churches, and even on the streets. Its just their churches, as institutions, however, are just not allowed to try and write their particular doctrines into U.S. Law. This isn't Iran.

Seperation of Church and State is all ready the law of the United States government like it or lump it and any institution in violation, should face the legal and financial consequences for not obeying that law.

Justice and the Constitution should rule the day end of story. Human Rights are not subject to majority votes or religous intolerance. Not in this country any way.

60. Sunday Protest -- Saddleback Church!
http://saddleback8protest.blogspot.com /

Saddleback Church Prop 8 Protest!

This peaceful protest will take place this Sunday (November 9th) at 10AM PST. Please spread the word!! Prop 8 is unfair and unconstitutional. A church's definition of marriage should not be allowed to be applied to the whole population. Rick Warren of Saddleback Church came out publicly in an email to his congregation telling them to Vote Yes on 8.

Please bring your friends - gay or straight. Christian or not. All who support marriage equality are encouraged to come show their support in front of one of the largest churches in America. Bring your signs if you have them!

78. Saddleback should lose its tax exempt status then.
They have something like 40,000 members... plus all the money Rick Warren makes from that "Purpose Driven Life" bullshit. They can easily cover them.

His eyes teared up. Not because we were looking at the Stonewall Inn of the 1969 Stonewall Riot, but because I (the straight older brother) not only knew what Stonewall was, but also knew a little about the history of Stonewall 1969.

86. My only (minor) concern is that this not appear "anti-Mormon" - just pro gay rights
I know lots of Mormon's - they've always told me their church doesn't get directly involved in politics. More concerned with "eternal" things.

They'll never get any respect from any other Christian denomination anyways - this was a real screw up on their part. Of course, all religions based on the standard Old/New Testament (and, I suppose, the Qur'an) are anti-gay. Don't see how you can interpret your way around it.

I do not believe the Church i am member of, should be involved into this thing. This is just wrong. Why could two adult be together as "man and wife" if they do chose it.. As I have pointed out, myself is not exactly found of gay, but I do accept what they are, and have friends who are gay. They know where I stand. And the respect it. And I know where they stand, and I respect their wiew...

I am very sad about the whole affair, and could care less if two of the same sex wanted to get into a partnership, to live as an family.. I believe that many in my Church, and other Church have not understand what this is about.. And I am also little insulted by them. Because this is an right to love an other man, or woman in the case of lesbians, that is what I would say "natural" for they who it involve.. I do no care as long as they do not trying to come into me..

If I insult some with my view, I am sorry about it, and sad, because that is never my intention. I do believe it to be the right to grown up people to love and to be loved regardless if it is same sex or opposite sex. I for one would respect them anyway, because it is the right thing to do.. And I truly find this meddling into the political scene for the Church to be dangerous, very dangerous. It is other thing that is important, than to fight this war..

And for the record. This sum of money who have been spend into this campaign should have been used to give the poor, or they without shelter a little better life.. It is a lot of money spend of this stupid campaign who could, and should have been used to help the not so fortunate to assistance to food, to shelter, to schooling and shurch...

I am sorry, that is everything I can say now.. I am so sorry about the bigotry Many of the LDSs member are doing to the gay community in the US.. I am so sorry about the ban of gay marriage. Even that I disagree about the term "marriage" and would use the term "civil union" or "partnership" between grown up people.. I still believe the traditional marriage to be between man and woman. But I do respect that Gay people want to live toghter, and have it formal in writing..

The bigotry I see coming from many LDS member is very wrong to what Jesus himself teaches and I hope one day that our Church should change.. Change to accept gay in their midst.. But I fear it is a long way before that will happened. And that many dissent, honest mormons would rather run away from the Church, than to be open about it.. This is wrong in my book..

I am just sorry, and sad about this.. In some way US is a modern as the rest, but in some way US are FAR more in the middle ages, when it came to gay rights.. I can just talk for my own country, who in the last 30 year, have accepted gay as ordinary people or so.. I believe it was in 1973-74 it was legal to be Gay in Norway.. And even if it took many year then to get a civilian union between to men or two woman who was gay, it is the law in the land today.. And I have no problem with it. This is what is right in Norway, and I accept it..

Prop 8 is just plain stupid if you ask me..

Well, for the last lets say 5000 year or so, the marriage have been between men and woman, not between two men, or two woman. But today, if two woman, or two men want to live together in partnership, or what ever they want to call the thing this is totally ok for my point of view.. If two grown up, want to live toghterer, and have their life registered in an public record, as "husband and wife" then so be it.. But still it Will not be an MARRIAGE.. You can call it an civilian union, partnership, or what you want to call it. But why you have to push it to demand that it should be named MARRIAGE.. Everyone know it would end badly if gay people push it to fast.. I believe it to be little to soon, to go the whole way... Sorry if you then call my bigoted and arrogant.. But I do not believe US as an country is comfortable with it yet.. In time maybe.. Maybe my own Church would turn away from this idea of how bad it is to be Gay... I do not know. But I hope in time it would be mor acceptable inside the Church, to be gay, even if it means you have to keep a low profile.. You do not "NEED" to kiss your partner in the Church room.. You can do it every where than just _there_

I know that many people have strange views about how people is Gay.. Some claim it to be programmed into their genes. Some claim it is a choice.. I do not know. But as I have tried to explain, to no prevail I guess on your part. I do accept Gay people, and have some friends, who I call close who are openly gay.. They know what I believe in, and they know what I think about it, we have always have had an open line of communication.. But they also know that I accept them as they are. regardless if they want to play twosome with an parter at the same sex.. What two grown up are doing in their bedroom are not my busies, and should not be it either...

And as I pointed out. This Prop 8 is stupid, and maybe more damaging to the Church than everyone else I for the moment can think about. It is wrong, it is stupid, and many who are gay inside the Church would maybe be scared off about this fight for "normal" people.. I know a coupe of men who are gay inside the Church, but who have a low profile. And I for one will never "rat" them out.. Never. If they want to tell the world, that they are Gay, so good.. But I will never try to convince them about something else...

Om the other hand, your claim that I am bigoted is just stupid. I have many times here on DU, said that I accept gay pepole, even that I do believe it to be wrong.. Maybe it is the way I have been grown up.. Maybe I am just product of my upbringing and my life.. If that offend you, then you have a far greater problem than I do.. I accept it, even that I do not are found about it. Whey I accept it.. Because I want to be accepted as I am, with all my flaws, with all my problems. And the last I then should do, is to judge others who have their problems..

I even have a tran sexually friend, who have plans to get the whole way.. I mean, to change sex.. I was shocked and have to take a little time off my PC when the news broke.. But I was not there to judged him, when I first was coming to my "senses" again. And he is still a good friend of my.. Even that, he is a 5-7 years time Will not be a man, but a woman.. If his operation is going as planed.. I do not care if he is a woman, or a man.. he is a good friend of my, and therefore I would be there, even that I find the whole concept little weird to my taste..

But as I have pointed OUT time and time again here I accept that people do what they do, even that I am not fully in agreement with them.. But if you want to make a issue about it, you are welcome to do it.. I could explain for mr Skinner why I wrote as I do, and he would maybe understand my point of view also. I hope..
