President-elect Barack Obama said Thursday that his new chief of staff “knows how to get things done” and that the country should be “grateful” Rahm Emanuel is “answering his country’s call.”

Rep. Emanuel (D-Ill.), who has a reputation as a partisan bruiser, said in a statement that he respects Republicans’ motives, and he stressed that “now is a time for unity.”

“I will do everything in my power to help you stitch together the frayed fabric of our politics, and help summon Americans of both parties to unite in common purpose,” Emanuel said.

He also noted the challenges facing the incoming president and promised Sen. Obama (D-Ill.) “that your White House will do everything in our power to rise to the occasion.”

Obama, in a statement announcing the hire, said that “no one I know is better at getting things done than Rahm Emanuel.”

1. OK, will Obama get Rahm to undo NAFTA..
.. the way Clinton got him to
push it through in 96?

If so, I'm a believer.

3. NAFTA was signed in late 1992
Clinton supported it with changes while he was running for President, and two changes (labor and environmental laws) passed Congress in the first two years of his presidency.
