Time to help the Pine Ridge Reservation- Blizzard- coats/heaters needed!!!

http://friendsofpineridgereservation.org/projects/Winter_Coats_and_Electric_Heaters.shtml

This is the link to The Friends of Pine Ridge web site-
I post it every year.

Please give what you can.

My daughter recently volunteered with Re-Member on the rez.
She was blown away by the poverty.
May I recommend the experience for all DUers and their family members?
http://www.re-member.org/

Pine Ridge is a national disgrace.
That we have people living in such conditions in the US
is unforgivable.

Again, please- give what you can.

On edit-
Here is the link for the Christmas drive links-
There are specific gift requests for children of various ages-
JUST DU it!

2. First thing we need to do is get some damn cameras over there PRONTO!
Get it up on YouTube and embarrass everyone for the conditions these people are forced to have to live in.

Damn this pisses me off.

Thank you for posting.

3. Like I said, it's a national disgrace.
Imagine what the money Sarah Palin spent on clothing could do up there...

I hate that fucking bitch, BTW.

9. Yes, all the religious kooks should stay away from other people!
If you can, seriously, get someone over there to shoot some video, put some text in there for donating and DU and other liberal blogs can get it kicked.

Is there anyone who could be considered a "spokesperson?"

They need someone to get out and get some press, radio shows, etc.

This winter will be very bad.

5. That doc was part of the reason my daughter went to SD to volunteer...
I rented it along with some others-
She had told me she wanted to do something to help other
people- Pine Ridge was the first place I thought of.

And off she went.

Please do check out Re-Member.org

12. I'm trying to get something going and I think I want to try for Pine Ridge
or somewhere else in the Lakota/Sioux Nations.

The (rough) plan is for a foundation to provide training and supplies to help teach through tribal schools how to convert ISO's (shipping containers) into self sufficient housing units complete with PV (solar cells) and other "green" technology. The homes would address the homeless problem and the training would help with the shameful unemployment/hoplessness numbers. I'm still working on getting the plan for the conversion of the units together along with making contact with others (tribal or charity based) who could put me in contact with people interested in this project.

Please pardon my vagueness, but the plan is still in the early stages. I think it's my calling to combine my two desires: to help the Native communities who are still victims to this day of genocide and environmental sustainablitiy.

8. BTW- to the Chavez bashers on this board...
Hugo Chavez was the person who donated heating oil to the rez.

He said it was not charity, but a duty.

Our fucking country/government does NOTHING to help.
A woman FROZE to death there a few years back-
she could not afford heating costs.
IN AMERICA, with the majors listing record profits.

UN-FUCKING-FORGIVABLE.

10. I wonder how many people here knit and crochet things like...
scarves that would be happy to donate these items to people who really need them. I know that many people who knit and crochet never get past making scarves and therefore run out of people who need the items that they make.

We're doing a hat and mitten drive at my kids' elementary this fall (my daughter's Brownie troop's idea), and I'm going to make sure that, should we get extra, we're going to send it where it's really needed.

29. Thank you for posting this. It's so important.

My family never has much, and I wish I had seen this post a week ago. I cleaned my closet out and donated a lot of good, used clothing and a couple of coats to the Goodwill. Every time I read about Pine Ridge and other reservations my heart breaks. I am not prone to tears, but my eyes well up and I get a lump in my throat just reading this. I will see what my wife and son have that can be donated. Also, pairs of shoes can be bought cheaply at Wal Mart. I can easily afford a couple of pairs to donate.

I had the pleasure of working for the Oglala Sioux Tribe for many years. They've been more than neglected over the past eight years, as I recounted here.

39. Are you familiar with the Re-Member organization there?
My daughter went and volunteered with them about a month ago.
I want to go this summer.
I agree with another poster that someone needs to make a documentary
about the situation and pound the media to to raise awareness.

45. I can't say I'm familiar with that group.
Truth be told, I've never even been to Pine Ridge. My firm wouldn't send me and I could never afford to go there myself. Instead, I was the boring DC guy who met everyone at the airport when they came out to try to fix stuff at the federal level.

40. I generally disbelieve in coincidence (or serendipity) but this!
I just finished packing up a box of coats, hats, scarves, gloves, face masks and outerwear gear for donation. I hadn't decided who to give to - most everyone here in the Interior is amply provided for through local charities like the Food Bank, Rescue Mission, and many others. So once a year or so, spring/summer and fall/winter clothes get inventoried, separated, and boxed for "outside" donations.

Now I have to go put on a mailing label!

Bless you for showing me where the need is this year!:pals::hug:
