Question regarding transition time |
|
Why is it so long? Does it take 2 and a half months to pack the white house?

1. It used to be even longer. |

Way back, the change happened in March. One of the relatively early amendments changed that.
Anyway, I don't think it could be shortened much now. First, you need time to certify the votes and do recounts if needed. Then the electors have to meet and send in their votes. By then it's holiday time. Then the new Congress has to take office and organize itself. Then they have to count the electoral votes, and theoretically the House could have to choose the new president. They also need to get started on approving cabinet appointments. Plus the president-elect needs time to choose and vet a whole bunch of people for appointments, get a legislative agenda in place, and so on.
