If I lived in Cali, I would have voted to maintain the right of gays to marry.

I still don't understand the argument against it, other than it's bigoted sour grapes.

Since I'm not in California or the other places where it was put up for a vote, I can't explain what happened. I do know that it was horrible idea to put a question to the majority on the rights of a minority, especially if that majority is ill informed.

After this set back, I think it time to reach out for allies, build coalitions, take the time to reshape the mindset of the majority.

It's the tide that needs to turned.

Trust me, your straight allies such as myself, were appalled by the outcome of these decisions. We are by your side.

The fight is worth it and it will one day change because of it.

1. Ditto. All the same goes for me. Except I live in CA and voted NO on 8.
There were a number of volunteers at the Obama office and the Dem office who supported Obama but were voting yes on 8. Many were surprised that Obama opposed the proposition. WTF?

I am so sorry to all my LGBT brothers and sisters. I will never turn my back on you. I will march with you and stand right by your side!!!

4. TBlue.. I live here too, born and bred and Im black too and voted against
that proposition. I posted in another thread that this was particularly poignant to me because I believe that it's the beginning of a slippery slope especially for people like me because I am black and marrried to a white texan Bohemian Czech. I believe that these types will not stop with taking away one minorities civil rights but will keep pushing and very shortly come after "race mixers" like me and my husband. I voted no as did EVERY BLACK PERSON I KNOW.

7. I, too,
am in a mixed marriage. I support equal rights for everyone, period. I don't believe persecution has any place in our Constitution. I don't want a church in Utah to decide what should be in the Constitution of the state of California. And if I wanted to live by Mormon rules, I'd move to fucking Utah.

Every friend and family member of mine voted no on 8, except one black girlfriend who, unfortunately, has made opposing gay marriage the cornerstone of her life. We can't talk about it at all. In fact, we've really drifted apart and for me this is why. She is a lovely, very kind and generous person and she is not a bigot except for this. I can't understand it. But I can't relate to her anymore. She called and left me a message that she's glad Obama won. I really don't even want to call her back.

2. Having read posts from other folks of color I have a question
I've been "told" that outreach is key but it can't be done by white folks (I can't get much whiter ;)). I've also been told that there seems to be some racism within the gay community, or it's not as inclusive as it could be.

What is the best way to reach out to the black community and help them understand that our right to marry isn't any different than Loving v. Virginia?

5. The fact is that most of us have a gay relative or two
Even in the Black Community.

It has to be personalized. For the sake of the our loved ones, the key is getting the message across that they are worthy of being equal and having the same rights as the rest of us.

Blood is always thicker than water.

3. Jeffery Toobin is a moron
Tonight on AC360, he suggested that the gay community put a new marriage amendment on the ballot in five years and maybe they'll have better luck....five years. Reminds me of my racist dad telling me that Southernors were "weren't ready" for civil rights for blacks. Justice delayed is justice denied.

13. I'm a black and think that people should be judged individually and not as groups.
How did the Lakers fans vote for the proposition? Did they vote differently than the Clippers fans? Should we boycott one NBA team if it turns out fans of one of those teams voted disproportionately in favor of the proposition?

Too many people looking for scapegoats.

18. Nobody is looking for a scapegoat. Welcome to DU.
Nobody is talking about boycotting African Americans. I am absolutely going to do what I can to get the tax exempt status of certain organizations revoked, because they created and funded this hateful legislation.

There have actually been very few posts "blaming" black people for the passage of Proposition 8, and the only one I saw was locked. All the other posts and threads I've seen were not blaming anybody, they were simply asking a simple question about why one group appeared to vote for the amendment in much higher proportion to other groups. And lots of us - including me - have pointed out that that exit poll might not be accurate.

What we are seeing is about a dozen very rowdy posters running around DU accusing a lot of people for being racist just for asking questions. I'd been tolerant of that up until today when many of those accusatory posts took on a distinctly homophobic cast. However, I'm keeping it in perspective because it's only about a dozen people.

it's not like that they want to marry you or break up your marriage - they want to marry whomever they chose. Why is America afraid of this?

The best thing that has come out of this is the affirmation of allies, and knowing that we are not alone.
