The guy obviously has no idea how to approach a dog or read its body language. He moved too quickly, reached from the side, didn't allow the dog to smell him and the poor dog registered his move as an attack.

didn't want to be petted. While terrier sometimes do give their friends "love bites" in play, Barney's snarl showed this was not the case.

He is sensing change and movement and his life is probably being a bit disrupted along with how the guy approached him. I have a Scotty-X rescue and she can get a bit feisty every now and then although has never bitten me.
