What do you guys think about this mailout from a local church?
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 04:59 PM by plaintiff
They come in the mail about monthly I guess, I've never bothered to read one of them but it occurred to me the election might get a mention...and it did. Now I'm wondering what was said BEFORE the election...I've been inside this church but only to vote. I'm not sure what to make of the spelling but seeing "your invited" at the bottom makes me wonder if the writer is just a stupid shit...?

edit: Sorry I mis-typed the link!

8. Alriiiight... "Barach" Obama.

It looks as if Pastor Graver needs an assistant who pays closer attention to detail. Although, I should be happy it doesn't read Barack "Osama".

9. Yes that's what caught my eye at first. Maybe it was an innocent error...
maybe.

13. Well, you could send them a polite note pointing out the typo...
or you could take the mighty red pen to the spelling and grammatical errors and mail the flier back to them. Or you could ignore it.

I don't really have a problem with congregants being asked to pray for elected officials (asking for wisdom, strength, guidance, etc.), but if it goes beyond that, unh uh.

2. I really can't comment on anything besides the spelling error,
but I'm sure there's a lame, punny joke about homophones in there somewhere.

4. I don't think people should have to vote in a church
They can vote in libraries, civic centers, schools, etc.

One of the reasons I voted early was also so I could vote in a public library and not have to vote in a church on election day.

5. I agree with that but if I want to vote that's where I have to do it.
(I could have voted early at the county election board but I couldn't meet their schedule)

15. However, as contentious and potentially dangerous
as politics has become in recent years, I'm not sure I really want voting being done in a public school. Particularly when school is in session. Our voting place moved this year to another place besides the public school and I know I thought it was a good idea.

11. I really don't see a problem with it.

While there is a spelling error in it to me that comes under the heading of human frailty, unless I have something else that tells me it is intentional. But even then, it is just something in poor taste.

One would have to know the particular theology of this group to be able to really make sense of some of the statements.

I would also think this is not your typical wack job fundamentalist group as it is a pretty cohesive statement and there isn't any ranting and raving in it. For fundamentalist, who had just suffered a resounding defeat by a Black, Muslim, socialist, communist, fascist, liberal, presidential candidate, there would most assuredly be ranting and raving in it accompanied by dark and foreboding statements of "The End is Near", make sure you have you rapture ready wardrobe in order.

12. Maybe I'm just overreacting to "Barach". It jumped off the page at me.
I don't know this preacher but I know several preachers...most of whom are pricks. Not all, but most.

pricks, although I think they are really more delusional than anything which makes them pricks. However there are others who are decent men and women that do have a deep understanding of spirituality. But you're right, their are a lot of the prick types.

16. You know, I'm generally opposed to generalizing (argh!)...but having dealt with them for >50
years, I've found that any time you get involved with anybody who makes a big production out of being a 'born again christian' you're just asking to get fucked in the ass one way or another. (That might also be true for fundamentalist types of other religions but my experience with those is very limited)

22. Born agains and Christian Fundamentalist, and
Christian fundamentalist Fascist are all the same thing just different titles. And they are bad news and I stay away from them like I stay away from the plague. And that has been my experience of 53 years and as a seminary student.

18. My guess is that the pastor unwittingly conflated "Barak" and the biblical name "Baruch",
I recently misspelled it "Barak" in an e-mail to a friend. Like Baruch, Barak is a biblical figure. For those of us who read scripture for a living, these things are just going to happen. If it's a Freudian slip, it's not a negative one. Baruch was a scribe for an important prophet, and a good guy.

get over it.
