"They took my life..."
Dear California,

Why did you pass Prop 8?

Did you think about what this really means? Did you think about the many committed relationships between loving couples who have had their worlds turned upside down? Are they supposed to just erase their marriages, their commitment?

A friend of mine called yesterday. He broke down on the phone. He said: "God damn it, they took my life. They took my marriage and they shit on it."

The religious fuckers ran a string of blithering lies on the TV - they wrapped their lies in our children. MY CHILDREN ARE NOT PROPS. My kids do not hate.

What the fuck!

Sincerely,

Gilligan
Sad California Resident

1. No excuse for what they did at all.
If there turns out to be no way of killing this in the courts, there may have to be a anti-prop 8 in the next election.

Not much comfort now, I'm sure.

Apart from that: The law can take away a lot from people; rights, money, freedoms ... but the love at the heart of a good marriage never depended on the government's blessing and never will.

(Really not saying it's no big deal because it is a big deal.)

3. I know what you mean
There are a few days that are forever etched in my gut - the assassinations of John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King and November 2, 2004 - the day 3.3 million Ohioans took time out of their busy day to spit on my family.

My reactions to similar events or threats are visceral and automatic - waiting uneasily through Obama's speech - only expressly realizing later that I had been waiting for the assassin's gunshots to ring out, and wiping the spittle off my family once again the day after an election.

4. I was thinking
that same thing... "I hope no nut ball is sitting in a window with a high powered riffle." Later my husband told me he thought the same thing.

6. I suspect most of us who were impressionable children in
1963-1968 did - that is the lesson we learned to the core of our beings those years - strong liberal leaders get assassinated.

5. So sorry that the lack of civil rights in this country has caused you so much
grief.
