2. The Mormons need to lose their tax exempt status over this.
Perhaps if they were paying taxes they wouldn't have so much to pour into political causes.

7. I agree that they need to have their tax exemption rescinded.
But, I don't know that would stop them from putting their noses where they don't belong.

You're the first to acknowledge it and them. I thank you.

In case you are wondering, these churches were sponsors of an ad against Prop 8.

The ad and the list can be seen in context here.

4. Several other "religions" weren't silent...they vocally supported the agenda of hate.
Some ethnic groups did too.

6. None of the above. I would have chosen the LDS church along with
the right-wing branches of the Catholic Church, and any other churches that actively pursued hate.

9. Me and people like me. I thought it was covered and I waited for other people
to tell me what to do. Never again.

I'm so mad now and really, can only be mad at myself for not doing more. It feels terrible that I let the corrupt right wing nuttery beat us. :grr:

11. But, we've learned something from the Obama campaign ...
... how to create real grassroots efforts.

If we have one group go after the Mormons for their tax exempt status, another group go after the deceptive 527s and another group go out into the communities, we can beat this things.

15. We need some kind of group for straight supporters.
Not to talk about policy but just to be worker bees. "Straight Californians for Eqaul Protection" or something.

We need to widen visible support and we need to do that NOW.

16. Agreed.
But, what Obama has shown is that it's possible to do what everyone thought was once impossible.

12. There was NO rationalist/secularist support. It was 100% religious
Edited on Fri Nov-07-08 08:28 PM by NAO
Seriously, I don't think you will any find rationalist/secularist people who supported the hate props (remember, there were THREE.)

The anti-gay sentiment comes DIRECTLY and EXCLUSIVELY from religion. And it was NOT just the Mormons. Focus on the Family, Family Research Council, and tens of thousands of individual churches worked VERY hard on this one.

I picked up a "pastors kit" for AZ 2 weeks before the election. It was full of advice on how pastors should preach on marriage, talk about the sinfulness of homosexuality and ask their congregations to support the prop. It also had a brochure drafted by Christian lawyers on how to push the prop from the pulpit without getting into legal (IRS) trouble.
