Email from No on 8: Quit your fighting
Just received via email, so no link

Dear xxx,

This has been an incredibly difficult week for Californians who are disappointed in the passage of Proposition 8, which takes away the right to marry for same-sex couples in our state. We feel a profound sense of disappointment in this defeat, but know that in order to move forward we must continue to stand together as one community in order to secure full equality in California.

In working to defeat Prop 8, a profound coalition banded together to fight for equality. Faith leaders, labor, teachers, civil rights leaders and communities of color, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, public officials, local school boards and city councils, parents, corporate law firms and bar associations, businesses, and people from all walks of life joined together to stand up against discrimination. We must build on this coalition in order to achieve equal rights for all Californians.

We achieve nothing if we isolate the people who did not stand with us in this fight. We only further divide our state if we attempt to blame people of faith, African American voters, rural communities and others for this loss. We know people of all faiths, races and backgrounds stand with us in our fight to end discrimination, and will continue to do so. Now more than ever it is critical that we work together and respect our differences that make us a diverse and unique society. Only with that understanding will we achieve justice and equality for all.

1. I wish certain folks here would read this and comply.
I didn't have a dog in this fight, being straight, but I am appalled at the needlessly divisive posting going on here.

And for the record, I and everyone I can think of also opposed 8.

17. What? Should I link to every post trying to "help people get it" that takes me 3 hours to write?
Or do you want me to write another 3 hour post just for this one bigoted person? How about YOU help them see? Why do we need to be beaten down with the burden of constantly educating people on the OBVIOUS.

Frankly, most people get the idea of equality pretty intuitively. There are plenty of posts that explain this in detail, many with over 100 recs. So give me a break. Some people just dislike gay people. They're not "simply uninformed" they are active or inactive enemies or people who have a deep disgust for people different than themselves.

7. You know, I had noticed that in the speeches broadcast from the protest last night...
that the speakers were very on point about saying that it was the proponents of prop 8 that were to blame because they lied and used scare tactics, and not blaming groups. I think they know what they're doing as far as PR is concerned.

8. K& R, but there is a difference between "blaming" and "noting" facts.
The facts that Republicans, Fundamentalists, Mormons, African-Americans, voting in majority to harm us and Whites, Asians, and Latinos voted about 50/50 to harm us. Not to mention that 36% of Democrats voted to harm us is disturbing.

I think some of us were hoping for:

49/51 of all races
Close to 100% of Democrats (at least something like 80%)

Some people were disappointed. Get over it. EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO VOTED FOR PROP 8 IS TO BLAME.

I'm neither Californian or gay, but it seems to me that the sentiments and thoughts expressed in this email are the ones that need be focused on.

I understand the anger, and the desire to lash out at those considered responsible.

WE didn't cause the resolution to pass. No one here did.

Blanket attacks on entire demographics are always wrong.

15. I confess I'm guilty of an angry anti-Mormon rant. I shall cease and desist.
I don't want to hurt the cause with my temper tantrum. It's a wise letter.

Thanks

18. I agree with the letter....

but I also blame the No on 8 campaign the most for failure when the margin of victory was so close. Where were the ads showing GLBT families that would be directly affected by this legislation? I'm not talking about the parents of a lesbian, I'm talking about gay and lesbian families and their children. Instead we get "I'm a Mac, you're a PC"?

"We know people of all faiths, races and backgrounds stand with us in our fight to end discrimination, and will continue to do so. "

This is an excellent letter.
