Sen. Norm Coleman has raised the first red flags about the anticipated recount in the 2008 Minnesota U.S. Senate race, filing a Minnesota Data Practices Act request for materials related to ballot security and revisions that have taken place since Election Day.
Coleman and challenger Al Franken stand just 239 votes apart after 2.9 million votes were cast. That gap was more than 700 on the morning after the election.
"Minnesota has a history of fair and clean elections, and we are committed to ensuring that this election is no different," Coleman campaign manager Cullan Sheehan said in a statement. "That is why it is so troubling to us that instead of the normal slight changes in vote totals one would expect during this process, we are now seeing huge chunks of votes appearing and disappearing - statistically dubious and improbable shifts that are overwhelmingly accruing to the benefit of Al Franken."
Elections officials say the revision are due to verification of preliminary, unofficial vote totals. Coleman has lost dozens of votes, while Franken has gained more than 400.
Franken gained exactly 100 votes in both Pine and St. Louis counties. Elections officials in those counties said the first reported results were incorrect. .......(more)
