14 - 18% of black voters supported McCain |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 03:43 AM by lamprey
That was a figure that regularly came up in polls, national and state, leading up to election day. Naturally enough, the same polls showed the race tightening in favor of McCain. Now we have ONE exit poll on Prop 8 in CA of 240 black voters, with the number of males so low, they could not be estimated, not purporting to cover rural (non black) areas coming up with 70% of lets say 1.5 million blacks voted yes on Prop 8.
One poll. And who exactly are the beneficiaries of that sort of wedge? The LA Times found a couple of black MEN to speak up. My take: Wake up.

living in California, who voted again prop8, I think you for some rationality. I just can't understand how I'm responsible, by virtue of being black and disgusted that some people think that it's acceptable to call me vile names because they think black folks are solely responsible for their dilemma.

12. Like Lamprey said, look who benefits |
|
People are angry right now (rightly so!) and angry people are easily pointed in a "useful" direction. There is no sane reason to believe "teh blacks!" were key to Proposition 8 passing. In fact as Lamprey points out, there's basically no evidence that even a sizable minority of blacks in California voted for the measure, much less that they were instrumental.
But who gains from having one largely liberal community turning against another largely liberal community?

It's obvious that something is stirring this pot. I listen to a variety of left and right talk shows and it's really disturbing. Between the right being in a MANIC frenzy to send people out to buy guns and the left being divided by this discussion...it's truly frightening.
Add in the economic nightmare and it is not a pretty picture. They don't want us to have the group hug believe me.

25. I can't believe the moment was so fleeting. |
|
I'm going to sound over dramatic, but it has become close to the powder keg that was predicted, just in a different way.
It feels surreal. I had to have a locksmith come and program a new key for our car today. He was recommended to me by my friends who are an inter-racial couple. Said what a nice guy he was. He came by and was real nice and told me I had just caught him before he left town. (He had two other guys with him and they were literally on their way after he finished) I casually asked where he was going....to the gun show in Tulsa...one of the biggest ones in the country. Yep, they're headed out to stock up and they believe the propaganda about Obama taking their guns. Hell, they'd just gone to the gun show here in K.C. last week.:scared:
We need to get our side together. :group hug:

16. you are not responsible and i absolutely hated the racial scapegoating that blamed you here at DU |
|
black people labor under unfair evaluation enough as it is. ever wonder why Obama needed millions of contributors and millions of volunteers out there for him? it wasn't enough for him to be the better candidate or the candidate that agreed with more people on the issues, or anything like that. he had to work harder, and he did, to get the same result.
on Tuesday i watched the greatest candidate i have ever seen get elected and i was honored to be a volunteer for him.
he just happens to be black.
now if black folks want to take pride in that --so much the better.
(but i digress...)

6. Exit polls are notoriously inaccurate |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 03:35 AM by Cali_Democrat
It's a shame that some folks have taken a single exit poll and used it to stoke racial tension because of anger about prop 8.
Dividing up the Dems is what the enemy wants and unfortunately too many folks here have taken the bait.
Sad...just sad.

10. The problem exhibited by the passage of Proposition 8 is the religious indoctrination present. |
|
We are all indoctrinated into belief systems to one extent or another, but I draw the line when it advocates singling out people and discriminating against them.
Hatred is something that is learned, and it is blind to skin color.

If you want to know the number, you can find it in a multitude of current polls.
Don't drag in state polls taken four months ago by pollsters of dubious accuracy.
There is no support for your statement. I don't know where you heard the 14-18% number, but it's way off. Educate yourself by reading the actual election polls.

so we should be skeptical of polls after the fact claiming to represent black support for Prop. 8.
well good idea!!!
ps-remember that poll in October giving McCain 22% of the African American vote in Florida?

Certain successful AA could have been voting their pocketbooks. Others could have been strong social conservatives. If I recall correctly, Bush was able to get a few votes from AAs due to this aspect of his platform.
