PRESS RELEASE: "Catholics stand with Mormons: Prop 8 protestors are 'bigots, intolerant'. "
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 04:03 AM by Bluebear
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov 07, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The following statement was released today by Bishop William Weigand, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento and former Bishop of Salt Lake City, in response to attacks on the Mormon Church for supporting California's Proposition 8, defending the traditional definition of marriage:

"Catholics stand in solidarity with our Mormon brothers and sisters in support of traditional marriage--the union of one man and one woman--that has been the major building block of Western Civilization for millennia.

"The ProtectMarriage coalition, which led the successful campaign to pass Proposition 8, was an historic alliance of people from every faith and ethnicity. LDS were included--but so were Catholics and Jews, Evangelicals and Orthodox, African-Americans and Latinos, Asians and Anglos.

"Bigoted attacks on Mormons for the part they played in our coalition are shameful and ignore the reality that Mormon voters were only a small part of the groundswell that supported Proposition 8.

"As the former bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, I can attest to the fact that followers of the Mormon faith are a good and generous people with a long history of commitment to family and giving to community causes.

"I personally decry the bigotry recently exhibited towards the members of the Church of the Latter Day Saints--coming from the opponents of Proposition 8, who ironically, have called those of us supporting traditional marriage intolerant.

"I call upon the supporters of same-sex marriage to live by their own words--and to refrain from discrimination against religion and to exercise tolerance for those who differ from them. I call upon them to accept the will of the people of California in the passage of Proposition 8."

"Tolerance" means I'm supposed to let you sniff my sheets and grade my character based on your view of reality? And then enshrine that view in law?

Blow it out your ear, buddy.

5. 'Bishop' Weigand is a extremist who does not accept the separation of church and state
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 04:16 AM by lamprey

He waged a war on Gov. Davis on abortion:

"As your bishop, I have to say clearly that anyone politician or otherwise — who thinks it is acceptable for a Catholic to be pro-abortion is in very great error, puts his or her soul at risk and is not in good standing with the church" said Weigand.

http://www.catholiceducation.org/articles/politics/pg00...

I could give the sweet Bishop some very precise and detailed instructions about where he can shove his "good standing", if it actually still stands.

6. Damn fucking right, Bishop Weigand!
I am bigoted against you and your god-in-a-hat buddies. Just as I am bigoted against all dumb assholes who will try to impose their will religious or otherwise, against another group of people just because they're an easy target. I am most definitely biased and bigoted and hateful towards your own fear and loathing and hatred of my fellow man, and as that has become your cause, your muse, your raison d'être, your bread and butter, then yes I will be hateful, bigoted, and intolerant of you until you abandon your ignorance and oppression of those who are different from you. Yes, Bishop Weigand, I am a bigot, and I challenge you to tell me that I am wrong to be bigoted against hate, and the people who express it, the people who codify it, and hte people who vote for it.

9. Looks like it's the fucking pot trying to call a non-existent kettle black.
People aren't attacking Mormons because of who they are. They are being singled out for heavy criticism for the very disproportionate amount of cash they threw behind the proposition relative to their numbers.

Charges of bigotry being leveled by the Catholic Church, of all institutions, ring hollow given the bloody nature of the Church in the last 1500 years of western history.

35. The utter hypocrisy of this representative of a criminal organization
Why aren't the Catholic churches listed on the state child predator lists? The absolute arrogance of this man's statement - that they are entitled to campaign for the removal of the constitutional rights of other citizens while asserting their own special status, even when they are guilty of covering up criminal activity for decades.

The level of deception is amazing. These aren't supporters of the democratic process - these are dominionists who seek to impose religious tyranny upon all the people and are squirming because we intend to expose them for anti-constitutional liars.

Apparently the Catholic bishop believes that, since the Church got away with criminal activity for decades (and often, with the heinous cooperation of local government authorities) that the government is supposed to be a branch of that church. It is time for Americans to stand up against religious tyranny and for this church to be held as responsible as any other citizen who participates in robbing others of their constitutional rights.

19. I left the Catholic Church because I found out my cardinal was shuffling child-molesting priests.
The Church was making it difficult for the authorities to prosecute the offenders, but Cardinal Law paid a price in the end anyway.

I call myself a Deist nowadays. There is no church hierarchy there.

26. Ha. Yes, and we similar bullshit from the KKK and the Neo-Nazis
about how we should be "tolerant" of other people's opinion. Newsflash: when an oppressed minority seeks equality, that doesn't make said minority "bigoted" toward the majority that is withholding equality.

I don't give a flying fuck WHAT your opinion is. The only thing I care about is that you don't legislate your bigotry. When you do that, you cross a line.

with other organizations, are allowed to engage in bigotry - and then attach the word "GOD" to justify your religious tyranny.

The absolute, stunning hypocrisy of behaving as if they don't deserve protest is astounding. The arrogance utterly amazing.

Perhaps someone should inform the bishop that the constitutional rights of his church can now be voted upon as well.
