Bolthouse Boycott ??

William Bolthouse has just donated $100,000 dollars to the ballot initiative to amend California's constitution to ban same-sex marriage. He owns 43% of Bolthouse Farms, a company famous for its juice.

A couple of blogs have mentioned this before, but, really, it's just par for the course for Bolthouse juice. Since 2000, much of that money from the juice has gone to fund fundamentalist, homophobic, and right wing operations.

Back in 2000, he donated $2000 to Bush's presidential campaign and $1000 to GWB's campaign in 2004.

He also donated $11,500 to Gary Bauer's Campaign for Working Families in 2000 and $1000 to that organization in 2007. The PAC was designed to promote "traditional families in the political arena" through electing conservative candidates and financially supporting "pro-family ballot initiatives."

In fact, William Bolthouse sees his business as a "platform for ministry." So much so that he set up a foundation as a form of tithing the money he and his family made from the juice business.

The Bolthouse Foundation is also a major donor to the Alliance Defense Fund, a group of homophobic lawyers that try to get fundamentalism and homophobia through the courts.

1. k & r for this most important topic--I have called my local supermarket chain demanding that they
remove his products, as I am certain they do not wish to support reichwing causes. and, until they do, whenever I am in the produce aisle, I make certain to let everyone know what this jerk does.

2. Not so fast
The company has gone out of its way to distance itself from its founder, who no longer has an active role

Activists Call Off Boycott of Bolthouse Farms

Californians Against Hate -- a group focused on highlighting donors to Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that could ban same-sex marriage in the Golden State -- has ended its boycott against Bolthouse Farms, a vegetable grower and juice maker whose founder donated $100,000 to get the measure on the ballot.

The Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday that Californians Against Hate ended its war with Bolthouse -- which included protests at grocery stores that stocked Bolthouse Products -- because the company's chief executive has provided evidence that Bolthouse Farms has separated itself from company founder William Bolthouse. This knowledge "provides us with confidence that Bolthouse Farms is committed to working productively with the (LGBT) community," according to a release from Californians Against Hate.

To give credit where credit is due, while Bolthouse founder William Bolthouse donated $100,000 to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign, their CEO, Jeff Dunn, recently attended a National Gay and Lesbian Task Force brunch in Los Angeles with a $5,000 personal donation to the No on Prop 8 campaign. In addition, Bolthouse Farms apparently offers full medical benefits to same-sex couples.

19. Hound Bolthouse. don't let him leave his estate or carry on business without
a crowd protesting his presence anywere outside his house.

Fuck with his entire life. Within the law, of course.

Same with the rest of the scumbags who's fear of their own sexuality lead them to hate other peoples.....

Get the big donors like this and they will rot off the vine.

3. I had no idea, my husband buys tons of their carrot juice from Costco and
my family has enjoyed it. No more, I'll have to start juicing for the family again, the hell with the convenience. That's just so disheartening to hear.

4. thanks for this
anyone know any other products or businesses that should be added to the list? I'd like to make it more difficult for these people to fund bigotry.

9. during the boycotts when we were trying to get the ERA ratified, people would ask me how I could
keep all the companies straight. just takes a little bit of will, I always said. my money is too important to me to give it to those kinds of groups.

during the first boycott against coors, when the head was giving money to neo-nazi groups, he stated that it was his money, and he could do whatever he wanted with it. I wrote a note and said, "Yes, Mr. Coors, it is your money, once you get it. We are simply telling you that you won't have any of OUR money with which to do it."
