What do black people want from the Democrats? |
|
Okay, the snarky post title was meant to get people to read it. Black voters have been supporting Democrats for decades and they came out in numbers to elect Obama. But I sometimes hear that they feel taken for granted by the Democrats. Their loyalty is not rewarded. I don't disagree that they do deserve consideration, but being a white male I don't presume to know what black people expect in return for their vote. I hope I don't sound racist here as this is a legitimate subject. On the other hand, I could tell you what white guys of Jewish background from New York expect.

For years, the same rhetoric that conservatives have used to describe America as a nation with a crumbling moral fiber or far too dependent on government regulation, intervention, or assistance was used to whip up fear among white voters of what it would mean if african-americans were treated just like any other group of americans.
when Goldwater, Nixon, and Reagan appropriated that language in national elections, and when Democrats began kicking out segregationists and racists, there was a huge shift. Their voting block used to be fairly even between the two parties-- since then, I doubt it's ever been less than 80% dem.

same thing everybody in the coalition wants... women, gays, labor, whatever "segment" you want to consider... we are part of the Democratic coalition BECAUSE we know we have a better chance of getting our concerns heard--and maybe, just maybe, acted on--by Democrats than by Repubs.

7. Stop an African American on the street and ask them |
|
Or stand on a street corner and take a poll. You're in New York. Should be easy enough.
Report back here with your results.

various black pundits I've seen on television talking about feeling the Democratic Party was taking them for granted was something I can't ask about. By the way, are any of you that answered actually, well black?
