I've been staying away from the Proposition 8 threads

and to my fellow gay DUers, I want to apologize profusely for the injustice that occurred Nov. 4.

I've posted several times my outrage over Dr. MLK Jr.'s daughter leading a rally here in Atlanta against gay rights and gay marriage.

I remember arguing with people at work (African Americans) during 2002 and 2004 when Republicans put similar measures on the ballot in order to agitate and further divide. I was shocked at the number of people, who I otherwise thought were good progressives, were so bigoted and close minded.

I just don't get it. I don't think I ever will.

I must say I'm at a loss as to why my community remains stuck on stupid in that area.

It's like they all are suffering from the Stockholm Syndrome.

I'm sorry guys. I pray the measure can be overturned in the courts.

But I'll add that I have Catholic family members - FAMILY members - who voted for Prop 8 in California. And they know I'm gay. One might guess they don't like me very much :) but that isn't the case. They're just conservative Catholics who think we should settle for civil unions.

The forces that passed Prop 8 were widespread and pretty much cut across the board. The real indignity is that our rights have to go on the ballot every year as though they're a matter for public debate. It's debasing, deeply humiliating and sickens me to the soul.
