Mormon HQ surrounded by gay rights activists
Mormon Church Draws Protest Over Marriage Act
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: November 8, 2008

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Protesters marched around the headquarters of the Mormon church Friday night, criticizing the church’s support for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage in California.

“Separate church and state,” the crowd chanted as it marched, some waving rainbow flags or carrying signs with messages like “Mormons: Once persecuted, now persecutors.”

An estimate from Salt Lake City police, who blocked downtown city streets for the march, put the number of participants at more than 2,000.

Preceded by an hourlong rally in a city park, the march comes three days after California voters approved Proposition 8. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encouraged its members to work to pass the amendment by volunteering their time and money for the campaign.

16. This is so wonderful. Americablog.com is working out a boycott of Utah and
businesses that supported this if you want to act. They brought Dr. Laura down and Microsoft, et al. Go and have fun.

4. It has to become a movement
This is the only way we are going to have true seperation of church and state.

Maybe this is what our next effort should be, we have proven that we can get things done.

revoke their tax exempt status. Nice folks until you look a bit deeper, under the shiny surface.

7. Considering their own history
It's really ironic that the Mormons are getting bent out of shape over "non-traditional" marriages.

10. It's not just history--I myself have seen polygamists in Utah
strolling around the stores with their teenage wives in tow.

The "church" does not officially allow polygamy, of course, but there are polygamists all over the place, so someone must be turning a blind eye.

17. Hit them in their wallets.
Unfortunately, Mormons thrive on persecution. They will LOVE the protests at their churches and the media attention. This merely feeds their members secret desires to be martyrs. Seriously. I used to belong to this church.

However, they love their money, so boycotting Mormon owned businesses, and the businesses of all those churches and special interest groups who had a hand in passing Prop H8 might be more effective.
