For the life of me, I could never understand why U.S. Americans insist on pronouncing the name 'Goebbels' as you have just phonetically spelled out, being that there is no 'r' in his name. Mike Malloy, whom I really enjoy, does it constantly and it makes my skin crawl. The 'oe' in German is a vowel combination that roughly carries the sound of the 'u' in the word 'fur'. There is not the slightest hint of an 'r' in that name.

Don't think I'm picking on you. who learned English when I was 8, my parents who had learned English in Germany never had a problem with the letter V. Instead, as other Germans and people from Germanic language backgrounds, they had a problen with the letter W - pronouncing it as a V as in their native tongue. I can't remember any German changing the English V to a W sound.

Eventhough I no longer speak German, I have no problem prnouncing the OE sound (which doesn't sound like a U in fur, by the way). As well as the CH sound as in ICH which is a soft sound made at the back of the pallet.

The 'v'-problem only arises when it is a foreign word beginning with said consonant. The peculiar thing about it is they could just use the German 'w' and it would sound fine. The English 'w' doesn't exist in their language. My girlfriend speaks excellent English, is currently doing her PhD in Canada, but even she overcompensates the English 'v' from time to time. It has always puzzled me.

The Germans didn't and don't pronounce the name Goebbels or any other word containing 'oe/ö' with an 'r', except when an actual 'r' follows the vowel(s).

As for your final comment, it has nothing to do with describing a Nazi, but rather with the correct spelling (and eventually, the pronunciation) of a foreign word. U.S. Americans love to flaunt their knowledge of Nazi Germany, but in truth, the average Joe is pretty ignorant. I see plenty of U.S. tourists here who still poke fun at the Germans for being 'Nazis', when in truth the Germans are a highly civilized and peaceful people, and this angers me. These same individuals can't seem to recognize the evil specter rising up in their own country.
