Mormons = The New Scientologists
There. I said it.

They're wacky and laughed at.

Boycott anything and everything from Utah!

4. Yes I have to agree with you on that.
I never really noticed until I had to spend some time in Utah. Up until then I liked the Mormons I knew. However, when you go into their hive, things change.

8. unfair to Scientologists
they do not try to wield political power.

They would never waste their time and money pushing a ballot initiative as have the Mormons.

Scientologists only want your money - every penny of it.

And I really dislike $cientology. Their political involvement seems to have ended when they succeeded in "convincing" the IRS they are a religion.

14. "they do not try to wield political power." Actually they did.
They tried to cash in some favors from Sonny Bono and then his wife after he died.

20. "yet" is different from " regularly, consistently, and overtly"
as has the Mormon Church

BTW, did you know the NSA recruits Mormons actively? That members of the Mormon Church fill the ranks of our most secret, spookiest spy agency?

It's because their missionary work gives them excellent linguistic skills AND the strict surveillance the church places them under gives them clean background checks.

This post is likely read by a Mormon NSA spook

24. They day they put together a California statewide ballot initiative
is the day I will believe Scientology and the Mormon Church are equivalently active

The Mormon Church is a political machine

Scientology is a money-making scam that as a byproduct has managed to achieve some political influence

27. I'll never forget checking out the local paper not long ago
and seeing Kirstie Alie, of all people, testifying before a legislative hearing in Tallahassee about how psychiatric drugs are responsible for all the evil in the world.

Kirstie Allie is suddenly an expert on pharmacology?

That's when it first occurred to me that the $cientologists had some political influence. Certainly not like that of the Smith cult, of course, but not negligible, either. I think they are just not as good as the Smith cult yet when it comes to manipulating the political system.

wiretapping, theft of documentation, etc.

see:

I can't find the quotes right now, but there are quotes from Hubbard about exploiting the law until they're the ones who make the laws.

They can and do try to wield political power.

Edit: Found the quote:

"Somebody some day will say "this is illegal." By then be sure the orgs say what is legal or not."

11. What the fuck do they make in Utah, other than baby Mormons?
Seriously, I googled "Utah products" and all I could find was a page of obscure grocery products that probably aren't even sold out of state because I've only heard of one. Can anybody clue me in on any significant consumer product made in Utah and sold elsewhere in any quantity to the general population?

19. Funny enough, I always found Utah among many red (Republican dominated)
western states to be very prosperous as contrary to the others. I don't know how they do their economy but it seems that the Church of Latter Day Saints does pour a lot of the tithing that they get back into the economy. I do know that religious Mormons regardless of whether they live in Utah or not do tithe and I am going to have to assume that a lot of that money goes back to Utah. It's only my observation though and I could be totally wrong.

and with the passage of Prop 8, they will make sure that some of the California jobs leave the state

Why do you think Apple, Google, and other technology companies visibly funded "no on 8"? It's because they know they will lose skilled technologists to states that DO allow gay marriage

31. mostly ag
Agriculture

In terms of revenue generated Utah's top five agricultural products are beef cattle and calves, dairy products, hogs, hay, and greenhouse and nursery products.
Livestock

Over 3/4 of Utah's agricultural income is generated by livestock and livestock products. Beef cattle and milk lead the way in this sector.

Other important livestock products are hogs, chicken eggs, and sheep and lambs.

Wool, honey, aquaculture, and turkeys also contribute significantly to the economy.
Crops

Hay is Utah's largest crop, grown to feed beef and dairy cattle.

Greenhouse and nursery products (potted plants and ornamental shrubs) are also very important to the state.

The wheat, barley, and corn crops are also important.

Leading fruits are apples, cherries, and peaches. Apricots and pears are also grown in Utah.

Leading vegetables are onions, potatoes, and dry beans.

Mushrooms and safflower are also grown in Utah.

Manufacturing

Manufacturers add value to raw products by creating manufactured items. For example, cotton cloth becomes more valuable than a boll of cotton through manufacturing processes.

Computer and electronics products, including communication equipment, computer microchips and scientific instruments, make up Utah's leading manufactured products list.

Ranking second is primary metals manufacturing, producing steel, aluminum and copper in the state.

Processed foods and beverages (dairy products, baked goods, meat products, snack foods) rank third.
Mining

Petroleum and copper are the most valuable mined products of Utah followed by natural gas.

Uranium is mined when economic conditions make it profitable.

Utah is the only state that produces gilsonite, a pure form of asphalt used in dark colored printing inks and paints, oil well drilling muds and cements, asphalt modifiers, foundry sands additives and a wide variety of chemical products.

Magnesium and natural salts are produced from the Great Salt Lake.

Utah is the country's leading producer of molybdenum and potassium salts.

Other mined products include sand and gravel, clay, gemstones,
Services

The community, business and personal services group provides the most valuable services industries in Utah including private health care, hotels and ski resorts, law firms, engineering companies, software development and repair shops.

Ranking second is the finance, insurance and real estate group. Population growth has benefited the real estate sector. A large banking company and several credit card companies have established operations in Utah.

The wholesale trade (food products, mined products, motor vehicles) and retail trade (automobile dealerships, discount stores, grocery stores, restaurants) services group ranks third in the state. Most of Utah's services are centered in metropolitan areas of the state.

They're both fairy tales made up by con men and sold to the naive and gullible.

25. The best investigative journalism ever done on Mormonism resulted in
Fawn Brodie's landmark bio of Joseph Smith, "No Man Knows My History". Excellent definitive read. Mormonism is completely based on a known scammer's fabrications, just like Scientology.

Like drugs, folks just want to feel good and not fear the unknown. But they just can't stop themselves from forcing it on other folks. Fear and false pride, what a mess it makes.
