Instructions on how to do so here:
http://www.civlib.com/2008/11/how-to-file-complaint-asking-irs-to.html"By making that passage of California's Proposition 8 a substantial
part of its activities this year, the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints has violated nonprofit law. Because it has broken
the law, it should be stripped of its 501(c)(3) non-profit tax-exempt
status. This law will not be enforced unless complaints are filed
against the LDS Church for its illegal activities"
This is something proactive we can do, at least to send a message
to organized religion that they cannot abuse their societal privileges
to engage in political campaigning.
THAT SAID.... all the arguing here is ridiculous, and this controversy or schism or call it what you will is making the wingnuts very joyful and smug, so just freaking stop!!
Blacks, Gays, and yes even Mormons, all have their good folks and their unreasonable folks.
Folks are attacking black folks in general, with scant data, and acting like every gay person is racism free. That's as ridiculous as saying every black person is homophobic because of a few polls. And making the assumption that those who are homophobic are being so out of malice and not ignorance (look I live in a very African American neighborhood and talking to my neighbor who voted yes, I found out she doesn't even know anyone who is gay, gays are just more white people to her-- she's ignorant, not mean). So attacking isn't going to do anything productive, but it's a great way to ensure that even the Blacks (and the Christians of all stripes) who voted NO will be like, "Well F** you then"!!
Protesting the Mormon church for disregarding the Separation of Church and State by going after their tax exempt status: Great.
Attacking individual Mormons or African Americans or those groups in general (or even whole states) as a whole because of an institution and the choices of a whole bunch of voters: NOT A GOOD IDEA.
So seriously, instead of starting a war between two important factions in our coalition, lets roll out sleeves up, figure out a way to reach out to some of the communities that voted for prop 8, and TEACH them. In the process we can do some good for others as well as ourselves.
