In the aftermath of their disastrous night what will happen to the republikkan party |
|
If history is any indicator, they'll come out more focused and ready for the next presidential election.
In 1964, they got butchered in the presidential election. In 1968, Republican Richard Nixon won.
In 1974, they lost 49 House seats and 4 seats in the Senate (This gave us 61 seats) 1976, they lost the White House (albeit fairly close), in the House of Reps we gained one more seat to put us at 292. In the Senate we retained our 62 seat majority. 1980, Ronald Reagan was elected and the Republikkans took 12 Senate seats to gain a majority in the Senate and in the House we lost 35 seats.
In 1992, the Republikans took a smaller hit (relative to 64 and post-Watergate), but by 94 they were back and in control of the House and Senate again. A control they lost only recently.
Reason for my post...Don't get too giddy here. They Republikkan Party is not going the way of the Whig Party. They will regroup and we need to be ready.

1. "They will regroup and we need to be ready." I agree completely. |

My feeling is that since WW2, the GOP has been anti-FDR and it's worked pretty much up until now.
They never really defined themselves based on what they would do, but on being against New Deal programs and ideals.
This past weekend (IIRC) they had some kind of conference where they were supposed to get together and create some kind of strategy for the party going forward.
If their past is any indication, they will claim to be against whatever the Democratic party is for, instead of being pro anything. So far, they've pushed two memes: they're not the same GOP as they were before and that Obama is a socialist-Marxist, etc.
My guess is they will simply come up with a new way to sell the same old anti-New Deal shit they were selling before their monumental ass-kicking on November 4, 2008!
They'll invent new ways to manipulate existing law so that more corporate money is funneled into the new 527-type PAC shelters.
Plus, they're not really gone until the Federalist Society's grip on our justice system is loosened and creationism/ID is removed completely from our schools.

5. I had this discussion with two young |
|
Democratic volunteers at our local Obama office opening.
I was with another person who fought against the Viet Nam war and I tried to make the point that our generation let down out guard after the war ended and let the bastards take back the government. I urged them to make the same mistake we did. If we get them down this time keep stepping on their necks to make sure they cannot get back up!

2. That depends on how we govern and act toward our fellow citizens |
|
during the next 4 years. It is up to us to present compelling reasons for the nation to embrace the policies and ideas of our own party.

3. They're drumming up Palin as the future of the party. |

If this is the case, I say give them all the rope they need, as they saying goes.

In 1964, Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. He knew full well that he was signing the death warrant for the Democratic party for a generation.
In 2002, Bush signed the Patriot Act. He had no clue that he was signing the death warrant for the Repulikkkan party for a generation.
This one's for us. Enjoy it. Can you do that fretting about the pukes?

13. It's not so much fretting as... |
|
reminding those who are sure the republikkans are dead, that they aren't.
Celebrations are nice, but keep perspective.
I don't think anyone thought they'd recover so quickly after 1974 and 76. They did.
Four years is an eternity in politics.

6. They will regroup. Some here believe the (R) party is gone for good, which is very foolish. |

They will be back with a vengeance.

have been raped in custody; and Sy Hersch, I think it is, said that he has seen videos of young boys being sodomised there (Hersch must be a strong man), and their screams are the most hideous thing to bear, you have to think the Republicans are under a terrible curse, not just as a party, but as individuals. An indelible stain on the US that almost puts the Nazis in a favourable light.

11. They will be back, but it will be difficult for them to wrest the 20-somethings from Obama |
|
The best they could come up with this time was Mooselini. They're going to have to do much better than that to get voters away from this president.

12. They have a Catch-22 to deal with |
|
- The religious fundamentalists who represent Palin's base cannot possibly hope to attract Obama supporters or social moderates in '012. - Old-school conservatives know they can't simply re-invent the party in its more moderate pre-Reagan/Gingrich days to draw back a few Independents without further alienating the Palinists. - Neither faction alone is large enough to overcome the Democrats in 2012 (or 2016, or..).
Oh, and they don't know the tubes well enough to draw in more of the 18 - 25 age group, either.
