"... out of many, we are one..."
Edited on Sun Nov-09-08 06:49 AM by YankeyMCC
I've been meaning to comment on this quote near the end of President Elect Obama's (I love writing and saying that :) ) speech on 5 Nov.

The great strength I think of President Elect Obama as a leader is his clear vision of unity and his ability to lead people in that direction.

Notice that this phase is "E pluribus unum" the original motto of the US. Not "In God We Trust"

To those who say it is worthless to protest against "In God We Trust" use as our motto, on our money etc... and even for similar reasons the inclusion of the phrase "Under God in the pledge of allegiance" I say notice the difference.

"...out of many, we are one..." inspires unity and cooperation.

Using phrases that require a belief in gods or equate disbelieve in god with disloyalty (as in the pledge) is divisive.

Just a note of observation and I hope a moment of clarity for all Americans.

4. Let's see what those same people think in 30 years...
I'm a child of the sixties.

All I can say is...don't get overconfident.

6. I became more liberal as i aged
My sons have grown up more tolerant and open minded then I ever was when I was young..they have watched stereotypes of people that have been shattered. They have seen gay folks on TV in sitcoms portrayed positively and met them as friends, seen a black president and have many diverse friends of every colour and belief, seen many things I never saw as a kid in the 50s or experienced as a kid of the 50s.
I think it is inevitable that open minded ness and tolerance is happening now, and I have hope things will change for my grandson's sake.

7. I think that's great. Unfortunately my experience is more mixed.
Also, I could never have imagined in my wildest nightmares that we would have a 2nd Vietnam War, in many ways, worse than the original.

Let's certainly hope for the best.

8. i think change and growth are cyclic
at least thats how i see it. I have also had a somewhat mixed bag, but now that I am closer to passing on, i guess i am wanting to leave this physical world with some compassion and empathy in it, rather then fear and hatred.
when i was young i wanted to see change occur more quickly..now i realize it takes time, but eventually it does happen.
hugs

10. That's A Good Point. For Some Reason Many Get Exponentially More Conservative As They Age.
It's a good point your making. Hopefully, they always remember what they were part of and why, and won't be as prone to shifting politically as they age. Only time will tell I guess.

9. It's A Great Line Indeed. Don't Care At All About In God We Trust Being On Money Though.
Not an iota.

I've always figured that anyone who actually was offended, outraged or otherwise by such a thing must be so irrational, petty, obsessed and downright asinine that it's easier to just laugh at them then to actually take their complaint seriously.

But Obama rocked with his speech, that's for certain.

11. Kinda missed my point
I care a good deal that instead of a unifying message our motto is by design divisive and offensive to some. And Obama has shown the power of leading with a message and vision of unity vs divisiveness, and thus the importance or at least the relevance and significance of having "in god we trust" as a motto instead of the original.

I guess Im obsessed and asinine though.

Though I wonder why I spend so much time on other issues is I'm so obsessed (I seem to be able to care about and act on a few issues at once even as an 'obsessed' person) and I wonder why caring about a message of unity vs a message of divisiveness as an integral part of our national message is asinine

Maybe you are just choosing to not get mine.

But I still hold firm with my position.

13. You're holding firm on the position that people who care about this are asinine?
Just want to be clear.

15. About having a divisive message as our motto which includes having it
on our money and in pretty much ubiquitously throughout our government infrastructure, like when you stand before a judge or in any government office.

But that's me.

ETA: Before claims of being a bigot are leveled my way, I should add that I don't actually conflate religious beliefs with having an imaginary friend, but was merely making a point - especially given your responses on another thread here on DU.
