Yet another religious figure demands that YES on 8 results be accepted because it is the will of the majority of voters, so gays should just STFU and get over it. That's the bad news.

The good news is, by his own logic, if the majority of voters choose to ban the Catholic Church that would be alright with him!

"Meanwhile, Former Catholic Bishop of Salt Lake City Decries Religious Bigotry in Political Ad; Defends LDS Role in California Ballot Initiative Protecting Traditional Marriage. Bishop William Weigand, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sacramento and former Bishop of Salt Lake City had this to say:

"Bigoted attacks on Mormons for the part they played in our coalition are shameful and ignore the reality that Mormon voters were only a small part of the groundswell that supported Proposition 8. As the former bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, I can attest to the fact that followers of the Mormon faith are a good and generous people with a long history of commitment to family and giving to community causes. I personally decry the bigotry recently exhibited towards the members of the Church of the Latter Day Saints--coming from the opponents of Proposition 8, who ironically, have called those of us supporting traditional marriage intolerant.
I call upon the supporters of same-sex marriage to live by their own words--and to refrain from discrimination against religion and to exercise tolerance for those who differ from them.

I CALL UPON THEM TO ACCEPT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE (my caps) of California in the passage of Proposition 8."

So there it is, the will of the people is paramount!

1. "Meanwhile, Pigwidgeon has this to say:"
"Bigoted attacks on Gays for the part they played in our coalition are shameful and ignore the reality that Gay voters were only a small part of the groundswell that opposed Proposition 8. As the former archbastard of the Sub-Genius Clench of Philadelphia, I can attest to the fact that Gay people are a good and generous people with a long history of commitment to family and giving to community causes. I personally decry the bigotry recently exhibited towards Gays -- coming from the supporters of Proposition 8, who ironically, have called those of us supporting marriage intolerant.
I call upon the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the Roman Catholic Church to live by their own words -- and to refrain from discrimination based on religion and to exercise tolerance for those who differ from them.

I CALL UPON THEM TO ACCEPT THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE (my caps) of California in the defeat of Proposition 8."

Amen, baby.

2. And again I have to say
Edited on Sun Nov-09-08 04:23 PM by SoCalNative
if they really respected the will of the voters, then they would stop putting the parental notification law on the ballot.

I guess for the religious and conservatives it's ONLY the will of the people when it's one in their win column.

And I do not believe for a second that if something like what the bishop proposes were to qualify for the ballot, they wouldn't have their lawyers in court before the ink was even dry claiming it was unconstitutional on First Amendment grounds.

3. My rabbi would marry gay couple, except that other religions prevent from doing so
Why should Reform Jews be forced to accept the point of view of the other religions?

4. Recently someone on DU proposed a new amendment...
...that would have adulterers stoned to death, since that is also in the Bible.

I think that's a little harsh, and would be unlikely to pass.

However, since the latest craze is to pass state constitutional amendments that limit people's rights, how about this one: how about, people who are divorced cannot remarry.

It's right there in the Bible, stating that anyone who divorces his wife for anything other than fornication, and then goes and marries another, is committing adultery. And adulterers should be stoned to death.

Now, since Prop 8 did not suggest putting gays to death, even though the Bible says so, I'm thinking we should show similar enlightenment and simply disallow divorce and remarriage. Because it's a big no-no, says so right there in the Bible, and by golly by gum, it should not be allowed!

And when challenged on why we support it, we can coo and say "but they can still have their relationships, they just can't call it marriage."

Make it retroactive.

As a divorced person who has not remarried, it would remove my rights as well. However it is something I am willing to do in solidarity with my gay brethren and sistren. It is absolutely outrageous to add clauses to any constitution that take rights away from specific groups of people. If it is a harbinger of things to come, then let's get out there and make sure these principles are applied consistently.
