Schwarzenegger tells backers of gay marriage: Don't give up!
The governor expresses hope that Proposition 8 would be overturned as protesters continue to march outside churches across California.

Reporting from Sacramento and Pasadena -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger today expressed hope that the California Supreme Court would overturn Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage. He also predicted that the 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who have already married would not be affected by the initiative.

"It's unfortunate, obviously, but it's not the end," Schwarzenegger said in an interview on CNN this morning. "I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area."

With his favorable comments toward gay marriage, the governor's thinking appears to have evolved on the issue.

2. Quiet opposition
He would say he was against it when asked, but he didn't push his opposition.

He's all over the board when it comes to gay rights, though.

24. I agree
He waste this election cycle doing nothing. Waiting all the state issues out. Then at the last minute... wasting time pushing for McCain. 8 would have failed had Arnold push actively and openly against it. He was place into office to fix the budget. He failed to do it. When a huge state measure was being pushed by mostly out of state money, Arnold let his state get pushed around without a yelp. He's a loser plain and simple.

why people feel the need to fight this. There WILL be gay marriage. These propositions aren't going to stop it from happening in the near future. It's a temporary assault on human rights that will 100% be overturned.

8. Obviously not, if it's been outlawed.
Having the most liberal state in the country vote against the rights of so many of its citizens is a major major setback. It may take 20 years or more before we can regroup enough to even try to get rights again. :(

23. Ha. Massachusetts is the new Poland.
 How in hell could I forget Massachusetts. I'll never live this one down. Still, California has that reputation for being the most liberal although, it does not any more. x(

And it took yes on Prop 8 four tries before it was accepted by the SOS.

16. Obama did make a statement against Prop 8 and it was used in a No on 8 robocall...

very late in the campaign, and of course Yes on 8 was using robocalls with audio of Obama confirming what Prop 8 is doing to the state constitution.

Of course, I don't think he should have ever been elected, but whatever...

22. Arnold could have just let the legislature handle this a few years ago. Different stance
for a different political season, I guess.
