Many members of DU are so USED to fighting everything that came out of
pResident shrub's office ~ we've been SUPERSATURATED WITH THAT NONSENSE for eight long gruelling years - ugh that we don't know how to sit back and ~ breathe a little bit. Rejoice in (and SUPPORT) our new PRESIDENT-ELECT (our president REALLY was elected this time!).

All of our hopes for the future aren't going to happen overnight. Our elected president has a few months to plan, consider, evaluate - and in this environment - I wouldn't be one bit surprised if he doesn't stand up there on January 20, 2009 with a bit of 'gray' showing at the temples already. Give the guy a break!

And, believe it or not MANY DU'ers, there are MANY MANY more pressing issues than gay marriage/civil unions to address. I'm sorry you are angry, sad, dissappointed.....but ya'll are going to have to live a little bit longer under the terms that you have become used to by now. "Change" doesn't happen overnight - and there are MANY changes that need to be addressed ~ not just the gay marriage/civil union issue.

"Don't be a "one issue" supporter of your new President" is a shorthand way to say it.

Be 'cool', DU'ers, et al,
M_Y_H

2. Agree, and disagree.
Obama was a huge step forward, Prop 8 was a huge step back.

When Prop 8 is repealed, then we can all move forward.

4. I have to disagree...
It's not just "one issue". How can something as basic as civil rights be lumped in with other things, even if they are pressing matters. We are talking about CIVIL RIGHTS.. not who gets the best tax break. I know the politics of it, and I know the reasons people are giving to wait. But people need to take another look at what has been, and still is the issue here for the GLBT community. I can't even imagine going through what they do and then STILL have people tell them to wait.

9. We all want everything TODAY, however, what we need and what we want are two different things right
now. We NEED jobs, we NEED education, and I pray we get healthcare. My father has been openly gay for 29 years with the same partner, if you asked him? He'd say he wants a better economy because his savings as he hits retirement has sunk to an all time low. He'd say he wants education for his grandkids, and by educating people they are exposed to far more experiences and ways of thinking. Would he like the ability to get married in NY? Of course he would, but, as he has done for 29 years he will be waiting a while longer.

MEANWHILE, the rest of us work on the younger generation, instilling in them that this is a CIVIL right. My 13 year old is my oldest, he is horrified this is an issue, he brings it up every time he hears it mentioned on the news. He cannot believe this is an actual issue. He met some transgender teens from our old state this summer, he was fine with it and spent the vacation hanging out with them, he's become friends with them. You keep reminding these kids that 1 in 10 of their friends is gay, and they are every bit as valuable and important to their families. We reinforce to our youngest, and even our oldest that if they were gay, we would still love them unconditionally. These are values we put in the next generation. This unbridled bigotry will die off with the older generation, kids like mine will become the norm as they hit adulthood. This isn't just my state, but it's occurring in many states.

And by the way, will I stand in protest with my GLBT community? You bet I will. It hurts me that this is still an issue, but I don't want it to be THE wedge issue in the Democratic party, to tear the party apart, when it just now seems to be coming together, when we have so many things that have been heaped on top of us at this time in history.

13. You know me so well.

Never mind I was a rape crisis counselor (certified 4 years), and AIDS/HIV counselor (certified 6 years), spoke on the front steps of the South Carolina State Capitol, the NC State Capitol, or advised 4 GLBTQT groups for 15 years, yes, I am just an internet phony.

You really should "mind your head," that far up your ass, you are surely to get an infection. Hey, but don't take it from a fag, who knows asses, take it from a kike with a Jew doctor brother who can tell you, having your head that far up your rectum, you're bound to get at least the sniffles.

ETA: Damn, if they ever take to the streets over spelling/grammar errors on the web, I am fucked!

6. My point is that even the vote on Prop 8 had a TERRIBLE outcome
It's definately NOT the ONLY issue! But many here are treating it as if the economy doesn't matter, schools don't matter, if one has a JOB doesn't matter, no ~ they wan't you to believe it's ALLLLLL ABOUT GAY MARRIAGE!

It's not, and people who are 'pushing it' aren't stupid. But peeps who are "watching this all" aren't stupid either.

My advice, which one can "take-or-leave" (and most likely 'leave': Stop being so high-strung on this issue for NOW. Don't be like sarah palin and undercut the ones who can bring about the change you desire.

No promises, just sound advice.

7. I can understand impatience in the quest for equal rights.
I think many people, gay and straight, are tired of being told to be quiet and just hang on, because equality for all is the next thing we'll tackle.

Besides it's on the front pages at this point - THIS point. No more shut up and wait.

It's not being a "one issue" supporter of the new president to be passionate about this issue.

10. Well that's how it SEEMS.
Everyone was sooooooooooo "bouncy" that america elected its first black president, a president so full of joy, hope, human kindness, understanding......and the gay community (or SOMEBODY, trying to act FOR the 'gay community ~ which I think is more likely ~ is already ripping our new President-elect to shreds!)

THINK people!

For once, can I use my user name and say "Mind your Head" - be very careful of what other people WANT you to think,

17. union vs. marriage
I think that the civil rights an marriage is probably the most importatn issue. I think that Obama should press his support of gay marriage hard.
