BAGHDAD — Three explosions in a northern Baghdad neighborhood killed 28 people early Monday morning, according to the Iraqi Interior Ministry.

The death toll offered by the Interior Ministry makes the incident the deadliest in Baghdad since June 17, when a car bombing killed 51.

The bombers struck on a main street in the al-Kasra neighborhood, a mixed Sunni and Shiite area in the district of Adhamiyah, blasting a stretch of pavement between two large restaurants. There were street cleaners on the road and commuters heading to work at the time of the explosions, which caused a high number of injuries.

Two local hospitals reported that a total of 49 people were brought in for treatment, some with serious injuries, but the Interior Ministry said that a total of 68 people were wounded.

The bombings occurred at about 8:15 a.m., according to an Interior Ministry source, who asked to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to speak to the news media. Bombs planted in two parked cars were detonated about five minutes apart, he said, followed closely by a suicide bombing.
