3. how is this even up for debate?
The amount of ignorance it takes to vote no on this poll disgusts me.

4. Because we've reached a point in which even legal terms have no meaning any more other
than how people feel.

13. that's exactly it
I made the mistake of watching The View this morning and when discussing Prop 8, the flat earth woman (don't know her name) referenced what she "felt" in "her heart". I don't give a shit what she felt in her heart. This has nothing to do with her feelings.

21. I'd vote for you!
"When I become leader of the universe, stupidity will be physically painful. "

By that I assume you mean painful for the stupid rather than painful for the rest of us since it already IS! (I know I'm in physically pain every time Bush opens his smirky little mouth!)

38. It has been successfully framed as a moral and not a civil rights issue.
It will take some focus and adverising cabbage to change the debate. Because gawd said so will win every time unless challanged with an extraordinary amount of fact and reason.

5. That's awful, I can't believe we can't get over this hurdle as a country
Of all the things other people can do that directly affects the lives of others (crime, war, murder) WHO SOMEONE CHOOSES TO LOVE upsets the whole balance of the universe?

7. Life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness. It seems to me at least one of those 3 should cover it. Marriage--hetero or homosexual should not matter. It certainly should not be something the government would control.

15. It's more an "establishment of religion" issue, imho.
The 'sanctification' of a marriage has been, for many centuries, the primary means whereby established religion has asserted control over the State .... typically a monarchy. Just ask Henry VIII. The issue is "legitimacy" (vs. bastards) and "entitlements" (inheritance) ... the power of the Church to designate an heir to the throne or heir to the 'title' (to lands, barony, lordship, etc.).

The "means to an end" ALWAYS becomes an end in itself. That's the fundamental lesson of history with regards to MYOPIC Pragmatism.

As for me, I don't care what they call it, as long as I have the same rights and benefits. I don't expect everything at once. Even a baby-step would be more than I have right now and a baby-step in the right direction is still in the right direction. Let me explain:

We started speaking up for equality well after many other minorities did, so it's kinda-sorta unreasonable to expect to have made the same progress. We've made great strides in an incredibly short length of time, but there's such a long way to go. I remember a time when a gay man could get dead just for being and I'm not that old, only 51. Most younger gay folks have never felt that fear. I remember that feeling of fear all-too well. Life is so much different only a couple of decades later. Everything in perspective.

My younger brothers and sisters have to keep in mind that it isn't going to come all at once; we have come further faster than most; and don't give up because we've just had a couple of setbacks. So long as we keep our goals in mind, we'll get there. There's love in us and around us.

The civil rights aspect of it is almost never discussed in the media
