prohibiting gays from adopting or being foster parents is short-sighted and ultimately . . .
expensive, both financially and socially . . .

gays and lesbians are often willing to take in children that no one else wants -- disabled kids, AIDS babies, acting out teens, etc. . . with this block of potential caregivers no longer available, those kids will remain in group homes or be bounced from one foster placement to another until they're 18 and kicked off the system . . . many will end up needing some kind of public assistance for the rest of their lives . . . others will end up in jail or dead . . .

all because stupid people let prejudice and bigotry trump common sense and the Christian charity they claim to practice but seldom do . . .

2. Let me tell you something...
I was adopted at birth, by two "Christian" heterosexuals.

I'd give anything to have been raised by two loving people--gay, lesbian, whatever.

I'd have saved thousands in therapy.

In my dreams, I would have been raised by two amazing gay men! :)

I was adopted by a Roman Catholic couple who fit every criteria of the Church.

They shouldn't have been trusted with houseplants, let alone children.

3. Two close friends of my mom adopted a young troubled teen
... they are two gay men. This boy was someone no one wanted... very troubled and hard to handle. They have given him a loving home and he's come SO far. This is a kid that might have ended up in jail and may now be a productive member of society. Why? Because a couple, two loving and stable men who've been together a long time, decided to give him a chance.

One, Arkansas changed the Constitution to ban singles from adopting or from fostering. Florida had their ban ruled unconstitutional by a lower court in Miami.

They would probably choose orphanages like the ones in Australia that turned into religious slave labor / sex camps.

20. Not this shit again ...
For people whose heads are firmly implanted in their arses, please introduce them to the Lee Glynn family:

Dozens gathered for a memorial service organized by the youngsters’ foster father to honor the memory of Katherine Lee, the mother of 15-year-old twins Shane and Patrick; Emily, 14; and Grace, 12.

(...)

Lee, a 46-year-old employee of a Venice moving and storage company, was stricken with a heart attack at the family’s North Hollywood home. Although the children quickly called 911 and Patrick followed directions from the emergency operator and performed CPR until paramedics arrived, their mother died later at UCLA Medical Center.

A family friend took in the four children until her landlord demanded that they leave by Feb. 1. The eviction order prompted a counselor at Fairfax High School, where Shane and Patrick are students, to launch a frantic campaign to find a place for the four to live before they were swept into the county’s 51,000-child foster-care system.

(...)

Within a few days, the search turned up Glynn, who heard about the children through a gay fathers support group called Pop Luck. Because the 41-year-old television writer was already adopting an 8-year-son, Iby, he was certified as a foster father. The Lee children moved immediately into his five-bedroom West Adams District home.

--http://articles.latimes.com/2002/sep/15/local/me-orphans15">Los Angeles Times, 2002

Defying all odds, they have remained a family.

The four Lee siblings were together again in the rambling West Adams district house they’ve come to call home. The elder three had come back from college to celebrate the 18th birthday of their youngest sister – and to celebrate their good fortune at being rescued by total strangers when they were orphaned six years ago.

(...)

“We stayed a family. That’s the most important thing. We became a strong family,” said Shane, now 21 and a junior majoring in communications at San Francisco State. “We used to be individuals. Our dad helped our bond as a family grow.”

21. Being short sighted is what the religious right is all about
Religious right judges have ruled in favor of health insurance companies that they don't have to provide birth control for women, while also ruling that they do have to provide Viagra for married men. Never mind the fact that they ruled that way on birth control for women, you would think that a health insurance company would be smart enough to think ahead and realize that if they don't offer birth control their customers could have more babies, which in turn causes them to have more medical expenses to pay for, which in the end will end up costing them more then if they had just covered birth control for women just like they have to for Viagra for men. But of course that's the short sighted thinking you get from fundies running things.

What immediately comes to mind is the Catholic charities adoption organization in Boston choosing to shut down entirely rather than open the process to gay couples. Yeah...THAT'S the answer. From 2006:

And they are homophobes of the highest order (well my mom isn't so much compared to my dad).... I would never have chosen to be gay, I was conflicted as hell when I was a child (and the hurt of rejection never goes away, or at least it hasn't yet).

55. Calling it short-sighted is actually being too kind. It's just plain nasty.
So many children needing and deserving good homes.

The RW fuckers don't have a problem seeing kids being abused or mistreated as long as the parents pass their "morals" test... i.e. they're straight and married.

I can't even think of words adequate enough to describe how disgusted I am at that.

May RW idiots who keep kids from being adopted by parents who can/will love them spend eternity in Hell.

This is one of those threads which don't elicit much discussion, because the OP succinctly says all that needs to be said on a topic.

A family brought together through tragedy that manages to thrive in a world that mostly denigrates gay people and our families.

80. Amen....
...I practiced law in SoCal for a long time and I did a lot of child custody. Gay, straight, bi, trans-gendered, whatever ~~ I NEVER saw any difference in parenting skills because someone was a particular sexual orientation versus another.

I do have to say, tho, what impressed me so very much is that gay couples and singles seem to have more empathy and seem to be more willing and more able to take a less than perfect child or baby. Some willingly sought out HIV / AIDS babies and lovingly raised them.

So...that's my 2-cents worth...and there are children going without loving homes. Why the hell cut out those who are willing to take them, raise them and love them?

110. You are correct on the short sitedness
But I don't think it is Christianity to blame, but rather the people who don;t understand their own religion to use it as an excuse to block adoption to a loving home.

Critical difference.

115. My ex sister in law saved a Chinese girl from certain death... against a republican's wishes...
My ex sister in law and her lesbian partner went to China to adopt a little girl. If they didn't the girl wouldn't have lived long or would have been sold into prostitution. But right wing conservative christians would rather a vulnerable child be sold into prostitution than be allowed to go to a loving home. Right wing christians believe a child living in an abusive home with deranged HETEROSEXUAL parents is better than a child growing up in a nurturing, loving, supportive home with two same sex partners.

My representative, Robert Talton of Texas, tried to get a law passed that would have empowered state social workers to go to anyone house and ask the occupant if they are gay or straight. And if they answered 'gay' then the social worker would have been empowered by law to remove all children from the homes. And this right wing republican claimed to be a Christian. People like him sicken me and give all Christianity a bad name. What is it with conservative christians that fill them with so much hatred? Robert Talton is just another religious fanatic who is completely void of any empathy or compassion. He has no idea what the teachings of Jesus meant.

If right wing christians had the chance they would turn our country into a 3rd century theology and our laws would be just as savage as those practiced by other backward countries controlled by religious fanatics. There are NO differences between fundamentalist christians and Al Qaeda. Both will use any means to achieve their evil ends. And both want to oppress the will of everyone who does not believe as they do, which includes all the sane people in the world.

Call Robert Talton of Texas and demand he resign. He is a disgrace and a danger. And if soulless creatures like him were given the chance that precious little Chinese girl would have been sold into prostitution at the age of 5 instead of living in a supportive, loving home with two women who are partners.

Right wing christianity is absolute evil.
