Dear Media Motherfuckers. Show us the PICTURES of the keyboards.
Listen up, you shitbirds. This is for ALL of you who perpetuate this BULLSHIT about the Clinton transition.

There is no doubt that even morons, thugs, and dirty tricksters, as made up the incoming Bush administration, would have taken pictures of the supposed vandalism left behind in the wake of the departing Clinton administration.

Here's news for you motherfuckers.

It never happened. Yet all your spokesmodels are out there saying this crap over and over and over.

Local news losers are saying it.

Network assholes are saying it.

Cable fuckwads are saying it.

It is in print.

Nobody stole the Ws off the fucking keyboards. Nobody stole the fucking furniture or the fucking drapes. Nobody stacked chairs to the fucking ceilings.

NONE OF THAT SHIT EVER HAPPENED.

And if it did, and if you wanna keep saying it, SHOW US THE PICTURES.

OR SHUT YOUR FUCKING PIEHOLES.

...... goddam motherfucking lying assholes ........

20. Every ranting gasbag on the right stated it like a fact
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 03:22 PM by Warpy
and the good puppy mass media picked it up like it was a fact. Eventually, we caused enough of a furore, along with the departing White House staff, that the incoming administration provided a picture of a "trashed" office.

The picture showed an office with boxes of paperwork stacked on the floor along one wall. Nothing was trashed. Everything was neat. However, the howler monkeys said it was proof of something or other.

There were no receipts for new keyboards per the GAO. There were no bills for cleaning per the GAO.

It was a pack of lies from a gaggle of right wing gasbags, the first in a series of massive lies that would eventually lead us into two unwinnable wars and an economic collapse.

They must be so proud.

72. It didn't originate from the right-wing gasbags.
It originated with the Bush administration. At the very least, they had hundreds of opportunities to set the record straight. I remember Ari Fleishcher saying "we just want to move on and have no official comment". They chose to kick off their reign with a pack of lies. Fuckers.

81. Actually, I remember the chimp stating that the rumors were false.
Even the chimp stated categorically that the stories about stolen silverware, etc., were false. He said something like "there might have been a couple of keyboards with the w keys missing, but that's it."

I don't have a link but it should be easy to find the shrub's comments about this, as it was reported. So it's particularly shameful and lazy and stupid and idiotic of the press to be repeating lies that were corrected once before. Fool them once, shame on them, fool them twice - the press get's fooled again!

I was in the service 50 years ago and something was true then as it is now. From local to state to federal, schools and towns and especially the GAO. There is a record of every piece of equipment and a tag on it with all the info about when it was bought, from whom, and who requisitioned it. If any thing was destroyed or stolen or altered there would have been hell to pay and everyone knows it. Let them play their little games, it's a new day and they got their ass kicked. SCREW-EM.

16. Good indication of their persistance in getting to the truth of stories before broadcasting them!
As most of the DU'ers on this thread have already noted, this was examined as soon as they started these primitive lies, and it was revealed there was NOTHING unusual, out of line at all, everything completely consistant with normal wear and tear, but the scum attempted to create an anti-Clinton storm with their concoction.

God forbid our current corporate, right-wing owned media should simply do a little checking into the original findings which we all heard, if we paid attention.

22. OKAY. Calm down. Some of that did happen. Not worth the press tho.
I'm sure someone took a W off a keyboard and taped it to a wall. It's funny. The keys are meant to come off in case a paperclip or diamond gets underneath.

Maybe two people thought of it.

Three investigations showed nothing, mainly because, I recall this, the investigators asked for documentation and received none. Later, after all three were done, Republicans admitted they gave them no documents because there were no documents. And, I think it continues. They had the information memorized and the investigators did not tell them to reveal what they remembered.

Then came two photos showing stacked binders on the floor, and some other one. The stacks were not perfect, but these were used binders.

Republicans continued claiming the photos showed the ..., .

After all, who are you going to believe, your own lying eyes, or Republican politicians?

45. it was like $12-13K
Bob Barr was obsessed with this - the first GAO report came back with "no problem". He insisted on a thorough re-audit, and that came back with like $12-13K, and most of that was normal wear and tear of people leaving offices after EIGHT years - marks on walls, damage to woodwork, spills on carpets, and some minor pranks like the keyboards.

This admin, did trillions of damage to the whole country

Edited on Tue Nov-11-08 10:35 AM by MookieWilson
the private rooms hadn't been painted in years - FDR's sinuses were really sensitive and he HATED the smell of paint - etc. It needed a major re-working after they moved out, though the public rooms had been completely renovated in 1939 for the visit of King George and Queen Elizabeth.

FDR: I never thought of it that way.
ER: Me neither. It just seemed inappropriate to spend money on such things during the war.

74. Exactly right
Eight years of wear and tear = only $12,000. Most pols spend WAY more than that on re-decorating one office, and the entire Clinton White House did only $12,000 worth of damage to the whole place in 8 years.

61. It is true about the W's.
The W's were removed from keyboards and taped to the door. The other claims are pure BS. The custodian for the WH confirmed that the worst he saw was after GHWB left the WH in 1993. The story died after that. Thee MSM is playing on some americans long term memories. You know anything over two weeks.

I personally know the person who did the prank. And the Bushies responded like the big babies they were by blowing it all out of proportion.

They fed the BS to the press and all the repugs feigned outrage in unison. They were setting us up for what would be the next eight years of war, borrowing and spending and lies.

They started lying right out of the box from day one.

26. Here's the link to the GAO report
http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d02360.pdf

Page 6 GAO-02-360 The White House

Damage, theft, vandalism, and pranks did occur in the White House complex during the 2001 presidential transition. Multiple people said that, at the beginning of the Bush administration, they observed (1) many offices that were messy, disheveled, or contained excessive trash or personal items; (2) numerous prank signs, printed materials, stickers, and written messages that were left behind, some of which contained derogatory and offensive statements about the president; (3) government property that was damaged, including computer keyboards with missing or damaged “W” keys and broken furniture; and (4) items that were missing, such as office signs, a presidential seal, cellular telephones, doorknobs, and telephone number labels. In addition, documentation provided indicated that some broken, missing, or possibly stolen items were repaired or replaced at the beginning of the Bush administration. Several EOP staff said they believed that what they observed during the transition, such as broken furniture and excessive trash left behind, was done intentionally.

Some former Clinton administration staff acknowledged that they had observed a few keyboards with missing “W” keys and some prank signs at the end of the administration. However, the former Clinton administration staff we interviewed also said that (1) the amount of trash that was observed during the transition was what could be expected when staff move out of their offices after 8 years; (2) they did not take the items that were discovered missing; (3) some furniture was broken, but not intentionally, before the transition and little money was spent on repairs and upkeep during the administration; and (4) many of the reported observations were not of vandalism. Further, two former Clinton administration representatives told us that, in their opinion, most of the observations were not true.

or the OP's purple-faced outrage is somewhat misplaced.

I think there were a few pranks (including the W keys stuff) but at the time it was vastly exaggerated into allegations of large-scale "vandalism" that turned out to be false.

http://articles.latimes.com/2002/jun/12/nation/na-clinton12

The story was ambiguous as to whether the W keys specifically were removed.

..."The GAO concluded that ”damage, theft, vandalism, and pranks did occur in the White House during the 2001 presidential transition.” The report stated that some incidents, such as removing keyboard keys, placing glue on desk drawers and leaving obscene voicemail messages ”clearly were intentional,” and intentional damage would constitute a criminal act under federal law. No prosecutions are planned, though..."

43. I haven't seen pictures either
Back in 2000/01 I lived in the DC area, and I knew a few people that worked in the white house. I heard about the "W-less" keyboards from one of the people that removed the W keys. It sounded to me like a college prank. About a week later, I heard about it on the news. The reports I've heard since have made it sound like the 'neanderthals stopped just short of burning the white house to the ground.'

I still maintain that it sounds like a few people trying to release some frustration after the supreme court selected the loser of the election to serve as prez. Nothing more.

Untrue stories, repeated often enough, become part of the popular culture. W didn't win any elections, but served two terms.

You know, I thought the keyboard story was funny and true for years.

48. I think it all started with Peggy Noonan Sally Quinn quoting David Broder: "They trashed the place"
The seeds for this lunatic meme started, I think, with this lunatic's 1998 piece in the WSJ:

http://www.opinionjournal.com/columnists/pnoonan/?id=95000430

Mind you, she was speaking FIGURATIVELY, but I'm sure she didn't mind that it became thought of quite literally:

It is hard to feel the full human sympathy for Mr. Clinton that one would normally feel for one who has paid a high price for his actions. Throughout the yearlong trauma he forced the country through, he smirked and maneuvered and muscled people. He acted as if he were still in Little Rock, still up against legislators in plaid suits who own the Chevy dealership. When Bill Clinton was governor and it was the Yalie vs. the yokels, the yokels folded when you leaned on them. But Washington is not Little Rock. This is why David Broder told Sally Quinn, "He trashed the place, and it wasn't his place to trash." And Lindsey Graham and Chris Cox and Bill McCollum are not yokels.

Noonan doesn't get anywhere near the blame she deserves for poisoning American discourse.

Oh please... this just rips open all the healed and healing wounds.

x( The GOP created and forced us through the trauma

 A mere year-long national trauma seems so quaint now... I am almost feeling nostalgic

:spank: Tell me again, noonan, how did bu$h get into the White House? Is he entitled to trash it if he pleases?

:grr: The idea of trashing the WH is so 1990s... Now we have an illegal president who has trashed the entire country and its Constitution

66. Salon: The White House Vandal Scandal That Wasn't
This article has a good overview of this "story"'s initiation and trajectory:
http://archive.salon.com/politics/feature/2001/05/23/vandals/print.html

The White House vandal scandal that wasn't
How the incoming Bush team nudge-nudged a credulous press corps into swallowing a trashy Clinton story.

- - - - - - - - - - - -
By Kerry Lauerman and Alicia Montgomery

May 23, 2001 | WASHINGTON -- The "scandal" broke benignly enough, with an item in Lloyd Grove's dishy Reliable Source column in the Jan. 23 Washington Post, three days after the inauguration of George W. Bush.

"Incoming staffers of the Bush White House," Grove wrote, were "apparently victims of a practical joke." Bush aides in the Old Executive Office Building (EOB), adjacent to the White House, discovered that "many computer keyboards in their work spaces are missing the W key -- as in President Bush's middle initial."

<snip>

The day after running an inflammatory front-page story, the Washington Post ran another scandal story inside, noting that Fleischer "had scaled back his description of a review the White House is conducting of purported vandalism." The "cataloging" Fleischer had previously discussed now consisted of an aide "keeping track in his head" of any damage.

<snip>

On April 27, the GAO's Bernard Ungar finally informed Rep. Barr's office that there wasn't any damage to the White House, or, to be precise, there were "no records of damage." It took three more weeks for Barr to finally respond, citing his dissatisfaction with the investigation but, ultimately, giving up. According to Ungar, an inspection of the White House by the General Services Administration, the federal government's property managers, did find "that there were papers all over the place, and that it was really messy." But there was scant proof of active mischief.

In an interview with Salon, Ungar stopped short of claiming that all the vandalism rumors had been proven false. "There was a sign or two here or there that had been altered," he said, declining to detail the alterations, "but that type of thing was not extensive." In any event, Ungar said, there was not enough information to justify a continued probe.

So, the whole thing is a tempest in a teapot. The press was suckered by the insinuations by Bush admin officials.

When Shrub and crew moved into the White House THEY took all of the keyboards left behind by the Clinton administration and replaced them with T-H-E-S-E!

Shrub had to have a keyboard he could understand, and most importantly one that Barney could help him use.

As for the fucking "W" they're looking for ... here ya go Shrub.

* has definitely left us with a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World.

Don't just vent here. Write to the bosses of the clowns who are spreading it like manure. Trust me, if enough people did this, they would stop repeating it. They consider that every letter they get represents about 1000 other people who were too lazy to actually write. So stop being the lazy one and log onto Media Matters and take action.
