Talk Radio this weekend was ugly. It will be ugly for quite some time. A Clear Channel “cigar show” host actually called Democrats “bullshit” and didn’t bother to dump it. Joe Scarborough this morning just flat out said “Fuck you” without realizing he’d said it.

But the racism and utterly tasteless Obama jokes in our inboxes, forwarded to us by our weird conservative uncle or the right wingers we call friends, or the loud guy across the restaurant chiming in with blatantly racist comments that he thinks is 'humor', using words that were not acceptable in public a year ago, or a week ago, has suddenly made a come back.

These crass and hateful comments are calling cards of what is to come. We always knew they were out there. Bullies and bigots, loudmouths and ugly, insecure souls who must prove how right they are about black men. Do not expect them to argue their “worldview” with reason and skill, but rather expect and be prepared for degrading jokes and overt hatred.

Racist emails, hateful jokes and bigoted comments laced with generous supplies of the "N" word make it clear to the whole world how they are feeling after this election.

There is no goodwill or genuine hope for a successful Obama Administration. They are in full attack mode.

We can take some comfort in the notion that, from a practical standpoint, for the foreseeable future, these sick jokes are all they got. They're shut out, baby. They've gone from being pandered to and pampered to being petty outcasts. It's also important to remember that the only power bullies have, whether they're playground tyrants in the 3rd grade or noisy assholes at the end of the bar, is their bark. Their bite is usually pathetic.

Challenge them even a little, and they return quickly to the dark, miserable little basement in which they allow their fungal ignorance to grow. Shed a little light on their hate and it dries up and dies.

Respond to the emails. Thank them for their opinions, suggest they grow up and oh, please remove me from “Social Liberal Douchebags’ mailing list” You can speak up to the bar loudmouth too. Suggest he attend the Klan meeting down the street so the rest of us can enjoy making history in our great American political life.

Only by standing up for civility, even in discourse, can we make this new era work. The election is won, the campaign is over. But there are still plenty of chances to put the President-Elect's defining moment in Denver to work, and say "Enough!"

You have the upper hand because in your presence they will say things they would NEVER EVER say in front of a black person. They don't care if it's unacceptable to a black person. But maybe if enough white people stood up and denounced this kind of behavior, perhaps they'd get the message that it's unacceptable to many whites as well, and they'll crawl back under the rock they slid out.

6. something i figured out years ago

when i was a teenager and people would talk racist shit i used to NOT say anything. i didn't speak up, or criticize what was said for the sake of being polite--i didn't want to offend *them* even though i found what *they* had said offensive.

and then i read something (i don't remember where or what-if if was an article, or in a novel--but it was written by a black author) that said when white people didn't respond to racist comments their silence was basically sending a signal that they found the remarks acceptable.

so...i changed. at that moment. i figured fuck being polite--*they* weren't polite--and how dare they talk that shit in front of me and assumed i would agree!

and you're exactly right. they say shit they WOULD NEVER say to a black person, or in front of a black person. and it is so important that we DO stand up to them and respond. because crap that is being spewed IS ABSOLUTELY NOT ACCEPTABLE!

8. I had the same experience...

And I work in the hospitality industry--customer service. I don't care tho--I will not stay silent if someone makes a racist statement within my earshot. I don't get as strident as I used to, but I will state in no uncertain terms that such conversation is unacceptable and the speaker needs to stop with the offensive comments.

It's true: if white people don't stand up against racism, then it will continue to poison our society. I'm not afraid of upsetting anyone--and I've had my job for 18 years, so I guess my bosses are okay with my attitude!
