The Next Republican President Hasn't Been Born Yet |
|
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 06:08 PM by louis c
i'm not kidding. Let's look at the possibilities.
1. Hispanic Democrats. Barack Obama and the Democratic congress will pass a comprehensive immigration bill that will be a pathway for 12 million new citizens. That's 12 million new voters. The Republicans will oppose this bill, alienating more Hispanics in the process, while playing to their ever shrinking base.
2. African American Democrats. The most loyal of all Democratic voters, they now know that we feel as loyal to them as they do to us. This group will vote in hearty numbers for Democrats for generations.
3. Women. Women will continue to move toward Democrats as Democrats fight for reproductive and work-place rights.
4. White Demographic Changes. Young white voters have more and more tolerance for ethnic, racial, and sexual diversity. Older whites will become fewer and fewer as time goes on, replaced by others who are more accepting of these diversities.
5. Stronger Labor Voices. As the new laws allow the workplace to be more unionized, these workers become foot soldiers in the reborn Democratic coalition.
This was basically FDR's enduring coalition from 1932 to 1952. Immigrants, minorities, woman and labor. I believe this is the realignment that we are heading toward.

4. It's been moribund before and has managed to come back |
|
I remember its being declared dead after Goldwater's failed presidential bid because his brand of conservatism was far too radical for that party to survive on.
Well look how radical they actually had to get before the sleeping giant woke up and tossed them out on their arses!
What they do is poison pill progressive legislation and generally act spitefully while the leadership casts around for the next fad.
They might come back as Teddy Roosevelt's trust busters or Lincoln's emancipators. However, this looks unlikely right now with the various factions fighting for control.
The truth is that you can't kill bad ideas any more than you can kill good ones. The bad ones will be back with a new vocabulary, probably a lot sooner than we think they will.
Whether they resurface in our party or theirs is the only question remaining.

and do remember that LBJ carried FDR's fight forward. Were it not for that war, he'd likely have run for and gotten a second term.

8. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play ? |
|
I was a young adult, on the streets, shouting, "hey, hey, L-B-J, how many kids you kill today".
Why did you think Bobby Kennedy ran against him?
He was fine, except for that one little miscue. The Gulf of Tonken, lying for 4 years, being a war criminal which led to the needless death of 55,000 Americans and millions of Asians.
Again, other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?

2. The GOP has started to be viewed as a fringe party |
|
I watched as life long Republicans voted Democratic for the first time, because they couldn't stand the hateful and ignorant rhetoric of the Palin crowd.

3. We haven't had a republican president since Ike |
|
This string of so called republicans since Nixon have just been a bunch of treasury robbing authoritarian pricks.
And it only took Joe-shithead 30 years to figure out they were screwing him. Woo-hoo, got a bunch of bright bulbs living in this country. :eyes:

7. I tend to agree, but let's not be too optimistic |
|
The Republicans have a way of emotional manipulation unlike the Democrats. They will ratchet up the fear and the lies once again, and the ignorant masses may still fall for it 4 years from now.

Seriously, do you think that the GOP won't be able to regroup, muster their forces and be able to present a formidable case in future presidential elections? What happens if it takes a long period of time for Obama's policies to bear fruit - there are no quick fixes for the sort of economic problems we're in today, and people are likely to continue to hurt for some time, even with the best possible solutins in place. This will be exploited and used to present a false case that Obama is mismanaging the economy, etc... oh, they'll find a meme, and it will stick., given thehuge resources they have to get out their message. They couldn't make anything stick this time because people truly wanted change, but next time, Obama will be the incumbent, and attack ads are likely to have more impact.
I'm optimistic, but on top of competent governance, the work that has been done by Dr Dean and others needs to continue, and the democrats can absolutely not afford to rest on their laurels.
