Secret Service Gives Obamas Their Code Names
http://briefingroom.thehill.com/2008/11/10/secret-service-gives-obamas-their-code-names/

Following in the tradition of first families before them, the Obamas will have code names to be used by the Secret Service, reports the Tribune newspapers.

President-elect Barack Obama and soon-to-be-First Lady Michelle Obama will go by Renegade and Renaissance, respectively (just as they had during the election). Their oldest daughter, Malia Obama, 10, will go by Radiance, while younger sister Sasha, 7, will go by Rosebud.

Vice President-elect Joe Biden's code name is Celtic. Jill Biden's name is Capri.

During the presidential campaign, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) had been called Phoenix, while his wife, Cindy, was referred to as Parasol.

3. Silly. If we all know his code name, why not just call him the president.

7. The code names don't serve any tactical purpose...they are simply ceremonial. n/t

9. Codenames don't serve any functional purpose anymore...
http://www.nndb.com/lists/050/000140627/

Secret Service codenames are a throwback to the period before electronic transmissions were encrypted. Although they serve no practical security function today, the US Army Signal Corps still assigns codenames (mostly out of tradition).
