Donors step up to help Scottsbluff pup with broken legs

THE SCOTTSBLUFF STAR-HERALD
The cost of repairing Peanut's broken front legs is about $2,000, says Deb Schutte of the Panhandle Humane Society.
GERING, Neb. - Peanut the puppy is headed for surgery - and maybe a new career.
The 1-year-old Chihuahua that was brought to the Panhandle Humane Society on Nov. 1 with broken front legs was to undergo surgery today, thanks to the generosity of people throughout the state and nation.
After a story about Peanut ran in the Star-Herald and The World-Herald, the shelter was flooded with calls Thursday. By 11 a.m., the $2,000 goal, which would cover surgical costs, had been met.
Humane Society Director Deb Schutte said the shelter even received a call from Omaha State Sen. Ernie Chambers, who offered to pay for the entire procedure. Schutte said the Humane Society had already reached its goal when Chambers called.
"We thanked him for his offer, and I plan on sending him a thank-you note. He'll be the first one I notify next time," she said jokingly.
Schutte said the shelter also received offers of assistance from national and state Humane Society organizations as well as a donation from someone in New York who had read about the puppy online.
