On to... LINUX... ok so I got myself an EEEPC 900 to take on to coffee shops
et al... it is cheap, it is reliable and I happen to love it

Here are GOOD instructions on how to install Open Office 3,0 on yours (or any other LINUX distro you may need)

http://www.linuxpromagazine.com/online/blogs/productivity_sauce_dmitri_s_open_source_blend_of_productive_computing/installing_openoffice_org_3_0

Been kind of... command language UGGGHHH!!!!! and I am having flashbacks to the ancient Disk Operating System 3.0, otherwise known as DOS and word perfect 5.0... did I just date myself a tad?

But still, now running the same new Open Office on my three machines (yes the win needs to go to the shop for a new power supply) but hey, the writers tools are amazingly good, and as a writer... well kind of need it... or rather gotten spoiled to it, and the Asus came with 2.0 which is a tad (very dated)

So it took me two months and a good guide to do this... FINALLY running 3.0 and I could not be happier

3. We are a three OS household
and the MAC is very much plug and play as well... and the installation routine is the EASIEST of all OSs... so easy in fact, that I kind of laugh at how easy it is

12. I admire macs but they are kinda pricey.
You've got to admit nothing beats the economy of a pc and its user friendly accessibility.

13. Nah,this linux machine beats MOST if not all PCs as well
in the price department

But as to reliablity...I'll stand by the Unix engine inside the Mac...and to usabilty..the mac.

I can say that from being a user of three different OS systems

11. I use linux, have since '95 and there is no problem with plug and play, or
viruses online (Internet Exploder) or email programs that execute any code that comes along as an attachment (Outbreak Express).....You know, the complete shit M$ sells.

For a long time Microshaft dictated to the peripheral manufacturer that drivers for their little doodads were to contain proprietary M$ code.......

So's not to share with the other kids.

In the last couple of years this has not been as rampant as everyone realized they could make more money writing drivers to ANSI standards....You know, the open ones.

I find it interesting that M$ is basically abandoning VISTA.....and their proprietary drivers, too....

Here's a question for your local M$ expert:

Is there ANYONE at Microsoft who knows what everything in the Registry does???

The answer is no.

Why would you possibly consider using an operating system that has LOTS of code in it NO ONE fully understands??

14. Look, I do understand the open source vs. closed source application and operating system issue.
I'm a mathematics dropout who worked in the programming and web tech support industry for many years only to eventually burn out. I appreciate the value of a really free operating system that provides more variety or "flavors" and certitude of command with much fewer WTF? incidents. I love a command based systems where things are done with rigid obedience.

I just kind of like XP, ans I was a '98 supporter before then. I use my system for entertainment and media, internet access, and little else. PC's just have a bigger footprint for this kind of thing.

8. Funny I use to futz with things like pages in DOS and other command
language thingies

way back in the day, and the memory and system tweaking... and all that...

These days I abhor vista... in ways that well. typing from the Mac... enough said. Need to take my WIN to the shop though, that is hubby's gaming rig and he managed to kill the Power Supply.)

But the little lappie, I use it at the coffee shop all the time. Will be taking it down to the campus for some research one of these days... it is cheap... almost, and I mean the almost part, disposable

But I would not recommend it to mom... she has enough problem with XP. I'd recommend the Mac.. but the Linux... hell no. She is your average user, by the way

5. I love my EEE 700 2G Surf
It's crazy how portable it is, and it does everything I need except rip CD's (and I have my old laptop for that).

Now that Target is carrying them, I think that Asus will be raking it in. An ultraportable laptop for less than $300 is a steal nowadays. I'm actually thinking of upgrading to the EEE 900; that larger screen looks so nice...

6. Agreed, it was just a pain to FIND instructions to get OOo 3.0 on it
I love how portable this is, and I decided against the 700 due to the extra drive space

Even if I am using the Thumbdrive for that mostly

Now I will proceed to copy to HD

7. BTW ...

This is what I actually meant to post before reading the "welcome to the dark side" message made my mind turn in another direction ...

This isn't Linux specific, but speaking of writing tools, do you use or are you aware of Zotero?

It's a plugin for Firefox and IE. I've only used it on Firefox, but it's great if you do any online research. It's an organization tool. Actually, it's great if you don't do online research, but it integrates with your browser in such a way that adding citation information is extremely easy.

I usually use a notebook (virtual) on three machines, that can save on txt. Three OS.s that can be another nightmare

10. This is the nice thing ...

It saves everything in a database that you can export into several different formats and move around. You can also save PDFs, screen images, etc. That's harder to move around due to sheer size. It has its own function for creating a bibliography. One of my favorite functions is it can correct the way the LOC site has mis-capitalized words in their titles database.

Basically, it made a lot of things I do a lot less time consuming.

Just thought I'd mention it.

15. Running a triple boot machine here: XP, Mandriva(KDE), Mint(Gnome)
And about to install openSUSE on the second hard drive, just to give it a look.

Anyone who has never tried Linux or gave it a tepid attempt several years ago has no excuse now. The latest distros (Linux distributions) have come a long way in appearance, function, and ease of use. My personal favorite is Mint, an Ubuntu-based version with additional tools.

19. Upgrading my Kubuntu OS right now
Got Puppy on the laptop. I especially like to boot into Puppy when I'm surfing the unencrypted wireless at the local bookstore/coffee shop. Took the lappy to my sis' house for an overnight. Couldn't get her wireless to work via Windoze. Puppy found it and connected just fine. :)

20. So you took the plunge. Good for you.
When I did some data entry at the Post Office I preferred DOS over windows. The Windows apps were clunky, ugly and were not intuitive. Once you get the keyboard commands down, you could fly.

I think I will drop by a local Target to see if they have any.

22. Awesome! What distro do you use?
I'm typing this from Ubuntu 8.10.

To upgrade to Open Office 3, I just added http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main to my sources and voilá!

23. A very broken version of Xandros
they should fix some of this soon... since they got Linspire...

They want to keep it simple for new users...but boy... command language and newbs just don't mix

eeepc 900 the price was right. I might just do a changeover to ubuntu rmmix once I burn the damn thing to a cd (The ISO that is)

Anyhow, got this sucker to work under the advanced setting and OOo3 is now working too

I highly recommend the writer's extensions. They got a leg up over WORD 07 in some ways. (Word 07 is still a hell of a DTP tool though)
