My wife asked this and I am wondering as well.

She has a sister that has two kids. If the worse should ever happen and God Forbid it...BUT if her sister and her husband where to die and leave the kids in the care of my wife AND she wasn't married to me would that mean the state can take the kids from my wife?

Fix post.

1. Yes
and it makes me sick to know that the idiots living in my state voted for this. It just doesn't make sense.

3. I have to wonder if people fully understand that because I have to
wonder how many have wills written leaving minors with unmarried relatives and how many are going to scream when they realize that?

6. There was real surprise in AR when it passed
On AETN, the PBS network here, local pundits were predicting that it wouldn't pass because of this very thing. Realize that DHS and family court judges pleaded with folks not to vote yes as well. I have lesbian friends who have adopted a biracial child with severe learning problems. I've been distraught over this--they will lose their child who has bonded with them and will be turned over to---whom? If you think any of the fundy freaks who voted for this would adopt a child like this, think again. I hope the couple choose to relocate to another state.

PS--these same "preachers" are telling their congregants that Obama is the Anti-Christ and other such hogwash.

8. One more example of religious tyranny. . .
and the fact that people were likely frightened by every "hate the gay" hot button argument the Republican nutcases could produce - whether true or not.

I wonder if one thing that could be done is for single, divorced and legally unmarried people to launch a tax revolt. The second thing people should do is to identify the marital status of every member of that state legislature and get rid of the fundies.

I know that reality-based people in Arkansas are outnumbered by the willfully ignorant and the superstitious, but an organized campaign to remove that cancer from the legislature is in order. It is abominable to imagine that a parent no longer has the right to leave their child to a single relative to raise if something happened to them - particularly when the alternative seems to be some whacked out fundie household.

I'm sorry for Arkansas - the people of that state should be embarassed that they let the Baptists and evangelical tyrants convince them to vote their own damned family rights away. Fools.

9. I think when kids are torn away from loving homes
or when some kid's parents are killed in a crash and their kids sent to foster care because the stipulated guardian is cohabiting with someone--this will make news.

My heart aches for the kids, though.
