Babysitter: Parrot Saved 2 Year-old Girl's Life With Warning
Edited on Mon Nov-10-08 11:20 PM by RamboLiberal
Karlyn Tilley DENVER (CBS4) ― A babysitter's parrot is being credited with helping save the life of a 2-year-old girl who was choking Friday at a Denver area home while the sitter was in the bathroom.

"While I was in the bathroom, Willie (the parrot) started screaming like I'd never heard him scream before and he started flapping his wings," said Meagan, the babysitter. "Then he started saying 'mama baby' over and over and over again until I came out and looked at Hannah and Hannah's face was turning blue because she was choking on her pop tart."

Meagan performed the Heimlich maneuver on Hannah, which stopped the choking.

"If (Willie) wouldn't have warned me, I probably wouldn't have come out of the bathroom in time because she was already turning blue, her lips were blue and everything," Meagan said.

Wow! Smart Willie! Bet Hannah's parents send a big bag of your favorite treats.

3. When we lived in South America, one day my mother heard this
terrible coughing outside the kitchen door. She went out to see if she could help the person cause it sounded like they were about to die. She didn't see anybody, but heard the coughing just above her head, and when she looked up there was a beautiful parrot just coughing up a storm. After a lot of sweet talking to him, he finally came down and got on her finger and we kept him for years. His favorite joke was to fly really low, whistling and saying "come on, dog" and all the dogs in the neighborhood would chase him. What a sight. He was a great bird and entertained us all the time.

ball across the floor. What a fun guy he was. He could talk up a storm.

Cherry-headed, Wagler's, mitred, etc. Very nice, mischievous birds. :)

19. I've always wanted a Quaker parrot
but alas, they are not allowed in California. They are considered agricultural pests.

So, I'll just have to settle for my budgies.

When I come home from work he knows it's me and makes quite a hapy racket.

37. Yes Quakers are great birds...
I too had a Quaker and I was going back and forth from Nevada to California (yes, in a cage in the back seat). The 'inspection station' was closed for years - then they reopened it. I was going to CA one day and they busted me and Sam (my Quaker). I had to turn around. Sad story - I had to place Sam in a foster home. It broke my heart. Sam was THE best Quaker. Never bite, knew tricks, and was just a great friend.

I have Sun Conyers too - they are my favorite bird (I still miss Sam the Quaker) . I like parakeets as well - their songs are very soothing...

17. It varies depending on the parrot species.
Our sun conure is more like a perpetual two-year-old,
both in intelligence and wilfullness. ;)

7. Not just intelligent
Willie's not just smart, Willie cares! That is what is truly amazing to me. Obviously many species of animals are very intelligent, but the fact that they show empathy and emotion is what people should really think about. Once I figured out how emotional animals are, I could no longer eat them.

26. Never had kids?
Edited on Tue Nov-11-08 07:04 PM by Dr_eldritch
Sometimes people have to use the bathroom. If you have kids, and you watched over them every minute they ever ate anything, then I'd say you were both superhuman and neurotic.

Kids sometimes eat stuff when their parents or sitters aren't looking, and sometimes it's reasonable to go to the bathroom for a whole minute or two.

BTDT. Haven't lost any yet.

29. And BoyMidlo managed to suck down some Claire Burke
lightbulb oil when he was 18months old. I know stuff happens. BabyMidlo fell and broke her elbow playing Ring around the Freeper with TM when she was 4. (not really, it was ring around the rosey)

Point being. And, I think you'll agree. If you perceive an inherent danger or potential danger, you try to circumvent it, no?

And in terms of split second. Not sure if I told you this. We moved into our house here in VA when TM was 10 months old. We moved here before the movers because in our CT house, I was busy putting in the outlet plugs, etc. and the day I was finished, she crawled over and licked the outlet. :scared:

We always traveled with masking tape from that point on.

Just put it on their hands and mouth instead of all over the house.

Always worked for me!

I used masking tape to tape off outlets in hotels, relatives' houses, etc. Worked GREAT and cheap as dirt.

31. Parrots are sharp-eyed and smart
My parrot watches me intently--making sound effects to go with everyday activities (like the sound of a rag scrubbing when I clean, the sound of gulping when I drink, kissing noises when I apply lipstick, etc...) He watches conversations and laughs when people in the room laugh and dances when music comes on---Very smart and intense focus on people.
