A message from Al Gore supporters:
THANK YOU, MR. PRESIDENT
As America begins a new chapter of history, our president-elect brings to mind the famous quote, “I stood on the shoulders of giants.” As we admire his equanimity, his clarity of vision and his dedication to public virtue, we do indeed notice him standing on the shoulders of an historical giant. We see it most clearly in his understanding of the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced. A crisis many of us would still today not fully recognize without your indefatigable and heroic efforts.
Many of us wanted you back in the White House for that very reason, to rouse and lead the world in addressing climate change. Others supported you for your early and courageous opposition to the ill-advised invasion of Iraq. Still others because of your undaunted resistance to the desecration of our Constitution and democratic traditions.
And yet we have had to defer to your choice not to run again, your choice for a less conventional path to civic influence. A bitter pill to swallow for many of us who thought you the best and brightest of our age. But out of despair often comes unpredictable new possibilities, such as another lanky man from Illinois rising meteorically from obscurity at a moment of national crisis.
As we rally to support this new hope, we think again of his mentor, who will surely lift him up in the dark days ahead. As America re-assumes the role of leadership in mustering the world to address this ultimate threat, we think of you and of ever more reasons to offer you our gratitude.
Thank you for taking the early thankless role as a modern Cassandra. Thank you for your steadfastness to the cause, enabling you to emerge as the Churchill of our time. Thank you for Kyoto. Thank you for your stalwart, effective opposition to genocide in the Balkans.Thank you for your visionary influence on humanity and your role as a modern Gutenberg. Thank you for your application of the ideals of the Enlightenment to contemporary liberalism. Thank you for a paradigm of civilization in harmony with our planet as the natural, if painful, evolution of humanity.
So thank you, Mr. President, for being a giant of history, for showing us the path to save civilization and the hope that we may still find it.
